442?

I have a '69 Cutlass convertible that we think is a 442. It is automatic transmission with bench seat. Is this possible? I have had the car since 1979.

If the VIN starts 34467--- it's a 442.

If the emblems say "Cutlass", it's not a 442. In any case, as noted above, the VIN is unique for a 442 in 1969, so there's no need to guess, just look at the VIN.

Thanks! The guy working on it said the VIN starts with 34467! It does not sound like the numbers match though. He had trouble reading the other number but it is not the same. Should have it back in a month or so. We'll see.

The numbers on the motor won't start with the 34467. The last six digits in the vin are the production number. That's what you want to look for on the motor to confirm numbers matching.

Actually, the engine and trans (and frame) have a nine character VIN derivative. The VIN is thirteen characters. The first character of the VIN derivative should match the first one of the car's VIN. The last eight characters of the VIN derivative should match the last eight of the car's VIN.

It would not be surprising if they do not match. The G-block 400 motor used in the 68-69 442s was not one of Oldsmobile's better designs and many have been replaced over the years, usually with a 455.

Why is it so hard to get the spacing correct with the 4 4 2 numbers?

Nice!

Sweet looking ride! Did you ever get a chance to confirm whether it is "numbers matching?"

You guys still there?
I have a "casting number" but it is only 8 digits? I am thinking one digit missing.
It is matching up pretty close to Joe Padavano's suggestion above. Also the mechanic somehow confirmed the displacement is 6.6L 400 CID V8

The casting number is not the VIN derivative I spoke of all those years ago.

The casting number for a 68-69 400 block will be 396026 G and is a raised number located on the "shelf" above the water pump. The VIN derivative is a stamped number and is located on a pad below the No. 1 spark plug and is nine characters long.

Casting number:

VIN Derivative:
