3 speed info please

Hi all,

I am Gerry from the UK, (Brexit Land) and have just joined the site.

In 2015 whilst on vacation in North CA i came across a lovely 62 Cutlass 2 door. It was for sale in a garage that had originally sold it to the one and only owner, from the same town. He had only recently passed and his widow was selling...i had to have it! 8 weeks later it arrived into England and has now become part of my small collection of Classic American cars, 2 Desotos 58 & 60, 2 Series 2 Chevy PUs, 69 El Camino, 74 CJ5.

The motor is coming out right now so we can make the under bonnet (hood) experience a little more pleasing. While its out I would like to re-build the original 3 speed manual transmission...what make is this and where would you guys recommend shopping?

Thanks in advance, Gerry

Welcome to Classic Oldsmobile and congrats on the 62. I have a couple 62's myself but no 3 speeds. I don't know anything about the 3 speed model but I am sure others will be able to help you out with it. Do you have any pictures of the car you can post. We love pictures.

Welcome. I believe that's a Saginaw 3spd, but is unique to the 1961-63 Y-body cars. It's got a short tailshaft and an output yoke that bolts to the output shaft (since the two-piece driveshaft has the slip joint at the middle). I assume you are also aware that the aluminum V8 in that car became the Rover V8 when GM sold the rights in the mid-1960s. Engine parts should be readily available for you. Good luck.

Welcome to C.O. and congratulations on your purchase. I always liked the looks of that smaller sized body. Best of luck, and send pictures. Larry

What makes you think it needs to be rebuilt? By the way, we really do need pictures of the car.

Welcome to ClassicOlds.

I love those cars.

I wonder whether your car is the one posted by John about a year ago?

I am going to do my best to get a few pics of my Olds onto the site.

The box needs a rebuild as it jumps out of second on power lift off.

Thanks to everybody who has taken the time to answer my question.

Gerry in the UK.

Hi Eric, the car was owned by a gent in Ferndale CA. The garage is called Tipple Motors.

Nice car. Quite a large place for the UK, too, if I may say so.

If memory serves me correctly .
Studebaker , Ford , Nash , and Rambler all used a Borg- Warner T-86 trans in one form or another . In a period from the late thirties to the seventies .
Main cases varied as to bellhousing interfaces GM being on it's own .
Input and output shafts varied as to make , again GM being on it's own .

Many of the internal parts may be the same in a transmission with the same gear ratios .
You may want to look at other makes for transmission parts .
You may get lucky and find some of what you need in your own backyard .

If not , you may want to give these fellows a try .
