Engine and Engine Bay detail
Got the first coat of gold applied to the top half of the motor tonight. The weather here in MI has been bad to say the least. I think it will need 1 more coat. Still have to do the 2 coats to the lower half and paint the intake. Once thats done I will mask off the block to do the POR15 manifold paint then its time for all the black paint to be applied. Hopefully after this holiday weekend we will be fully painted and onto reassembly.
Made a lot of progress over the Memorial Day weekend. Got the motor completely painted. The under hood painted, cowl and top plate painted. Also painted the wheel liners and the rest of the brackets. Need to still do the exhaust manifolds and steering gear box and arm. Getting really close to the car show at Greenfield Village on fathers day weekend. Still have to rebuild everything, get it running and tuned. Install the new master cylinder and booster, bleed the brakes, test drive the car and clean and detail it all. The next few weeks will be filled with a lot of work and little sleep.
Put in a few more hours last night after cutting the lawn for 2 hours. Got the 1st of 2 coats of the POR exhaust manifold paint on. Also finished cleaning the fan assembly and clutch. Got the fan shroud painted and finished painting and detailing the altenator. Also not pictured while I was on the bottom side painting the exhaust manifolds I painted the transmission. Tonight I need to finish cadium plating (using eastwoods spray kit) the fuel pump and clean and paint all the bolts and hardware to start reassembling the car this weekend
Got the intake manifold, valve cover, new plugs, AC compressor as well as the alternator and Power steering pump (missed a bracket) installed over the weekend. Now we are closer to starting the car up this coming weekend
made more progress last night. Got the negative battery cable and new battery tray installed. Routed the positive cable but need an extra hand to get the cable turned enough to mount to the starter. I notice that the new + cable has this extra wire on it. The old one wasn't a original or correct wire BUT it did not have this extra wire. Tried looking up in my service manual but couldn't find it. Not sure what its for or where it goes??? Is it important since the old one did not have it?

On 72 Cutlass yes, it's right next to the voltage regulator. It was moved after 1971. Here's a picture from the 72 Assembly Manual. The attachment is high res so you can blow it up easily for details.
Will do! Took last night off for a little R&R work has been hectic but will be back out in the garage tonight in hopes to be able to run ands drive no later than this Sunday
Getting so close now. The + cable is all hooked up and belts are routed just not tight. Got the fan assembly on as well as the shroud. Hung the washer bottle and coolant over flow I have. Tried to tighten down the batter tray I bought from the parts place and the clamp when tighten goes upwards and wont hold down the battery so I will have to try and modify it. Goal is to be running and driving by Sunday afternoon. Today we will but on the coolant hoses and test the electrical when we get the battery in.
Well shes up and running and driving. Still needs a better tune on the motor but we will get that done this week. Need to change the oil and put the decals on and do some touch ups from some leaky brake fluid. Looks like we will make our deadline for the car show at Greenfield Village Father's Day weekend.
Shouldn't matter about the heat. The decals (good ones) will take that without any problem. Who did you buy from? ILT has good quality at good price. Dr. Decal has good ones too but a bit more money. The ones from other suppliers have had questionable results in labeling and adhesion from feedback I've seen.
Still working out the bugs. Timing seems to be way off. I think we are off a tooth or two on the distributor. Car has no power or no want to go when under load (accelerating over 35mph) Plan is to pull the distributor and manually crank the engine to TDC. Hopefully it will be corrected by this weekend. Tried advancing the distributor and it bogs worse and retarding it makes it misfire.
I think one of the main issues with the car not running right is I don't have my vacuum lines in the right place looked in my service manual section 6c-11 I believe it was and that page is not in my book. Don't see any torn out pages but the page for vacuum routing is not there. The car did not and still does not have the vacuum switch on the front of the intake. The car ran fine before with out it.
Well its all done now. Got the car down to Motor Muster at Greenfield Village in Dearborn this weekend. The car drove flawlessly and showed very well. Even though we did not win anything the car and the memories of the work and time with them family is the true trophy. parked next to my good friends yellow 72 as well this weekend. Cant wait to do the next project next spring. Now we will just enjoy the car and drive it as much as we can.
Thank you! It was fun and frustrating all at the same time. The car def fought us the whole way but the end result speaks for it self. it was great hearing do many positive comments about how clean and show room new it looked.
