Nobody was hurt and that's what is most important. Hagerty has been fantastic. she will be back on the road again. hopefully be summer.

 

Ouch, how bad is the frame kinked and where?

 

The rear frame is buckled just in front of the bumper brackets. Brackets are wasted. We didn't see any other frame damage.I plan on pulling the bumper off tomorrow night . I am hoping to start pulling in it Saturday. Its nice to have dads frame machine to use.

 

Lucky you, hopefully it won't be too severe and be an easy fix. Did the insurance co total it?

 

No. It was real close though.

 

so I got the rear bumper off today. We discussed where and how we are going to start pulling on it. hope to find more time this week to pull.

 

So today while I am at work , dad pulled the frame and rear body panel back to where they should be. the passenger quarter pulled back well too. things are looking up.

 

I agree, it is not what you want to see happen. I was lucky, 10/24 I was rear-ended, but I was in my wife's car. Otherwise I would be looking at a similar situation. Looks like you are fortunate to have a frame machine available and a shop to work on it. Hope to see pics of it on the road this Spring. Good Luck.

 

I a very lucky to have the equipment to work on this . dad owned his own bodyshop from 1978. he is retired now and mostly works on restoring his model a's . he has been hitting his 31 coupe real hard lately. so for him to take a whole day to get mine back on track was a big deal.

so I got all the mouldings ,side marker lights,gastank, and decklid off last night. New deck lid is on its way right now. Plan is to get it fitted this weekend and begin quarter replacement. I will do my best to have step by step pictures of that process. sorry for the blurry pic. I am a bit shakey anymore.

 

so when I was taking everything out I noticed that my splatter paint doesn't cover the entire trunk floor and it looks like the seam sealer guy had a bit extra he had to get rid of.

 

No rust should be hiding under there.

 

Tonight I got over to the garage for a couple hours. Bolted the deck lid on. We had to pull the rear body panel some more and tweek it a bit . got it fitting and closing really nice. it pops up just a little bit when you unlatch it. gaps are all good. Then I spent another 2 hours with the DA and some 40 grit going thru two coats of paint and primer. I still have about an hour left of stripping the outside. the inside needs a little work so tomorrow I will pull it back off sand blast the bottom and start fixing what ever I find.

I have a set of nos convertible quarters. I plan on using them. They are a bit different by the trunk lid seam due to the rounded corner, but I have them. nobody makes an aftermarket supreme full quarter. I have only seen one set of nos supreme quarters and that's on ebay. I can't afford that price. So yes "full" quarters.

 

Your car looks to be rust free and it looks like you pulled most of the quarter out straight. Is it possible you could metal finish that quarter and get those dents out with out using the nos quarter ? Or is there something I am missing ?

 

If you were much closer you could come cut the quarters off my parts car and whatever else you needed back there .

 

The lower corner of the right quarter was patched 20 years ago when I redid it last time. The rot is back about four inchs up and six inchs back . I could just patch it again and the hammer and dolly the ret of the quarter to get it straight enough to skim coat the whole quarter from the extension to almost the door. that's a lot of of filler and sanding. the seam for the convertiable quarter will be from the front of the sail panel to about two inchs back from the stock seam in the trunk area. on top of the quarter. it will be a better finished product with less filler to replace the whole quarter.

 

I really need to make a trip down that way and do that. its to bad your so dam far away.

 

So got some time this weekend to work on her. I got the trunk lid in side sand blasted and found a little rot along lip under the trim molding. I expected it to be way worse than it was. I had to put one patch in about three inches long by about two inches wide . I cut out the rot and bent up the outer lip. placed the patch under the lip hammer and dollied the lip back down and welded the patch in. ground it down and finished t with some filler. Sanded smooth and primed. I did have a few other small holes that I welded up and then finished. I think it turned out pretty good.

 

Good, my Friend that is Damn Good, very nice work, from someione who is learning to appreciate just how much work welding is. I am assuming that you are spraying in a heated shop? I wanted to spray a coat of primer to stabalize my welding while I was continuing with metal work, but am afraid it is too cold in the garage ( unheated Garage) , plus I was worried I would need a fresh air supplied mask to spray,

anyway looks great

Yes it is heated when working we keep it around 60 or so. when painting it gets cranked to 70. dad has a hanging reznor heater that's gotta be 40 years old. still works like new. he replaced the gas valve two years ago and a new thermostat too. hopefully I will have time tomorrow night to sand the inside of the trunk lid and get it painted. I would like to have it installed this weekend. Then I have to finish pulling the rocker trim and quarter trim in front of the rear wheels. hopefully the quarter replacement can begin before Christmas.

 

so as far as a fresh air supplied mask goes. it really is not a required. I use a respirator. If you have any facial hair put some Vaseline on your face where the mask is on the hair to make sure you have a good seal. also make sure the mask cartridges are rated for what you are doing. place a box fan with a furnace filter over it in a window to draw air out of your garage. I would recommend a propane tank top heater to get the shop warmed up god and warm before you spray. maybe get the shop up to 80 if you can then open the window with the fan on low. right before you spray turn of the heater. then I would wait till the air is clean to turn the heater back on. hope this helps.

So first paint sprayed! I want to get the deck lid fitted and ready for the quarter panel fitment. I went over and sanded it all with 220 then 400. wiped her down and got her covered in some 3 coats of Pinehurst base and 3 coats of clear. Its good to have progress!

 

started to pull the interior out last night. found broadcast card still attached to the rear seat bottom.

 

Very nice work and a nice find, man tgat thing is clean inside and out

 

removed the interior last weekend. found some rot that is gonna need fixed.

 

I had some free time away from the garage at my house so I found some guys on here restored their tail lights . mine got destroyed in the accident so I got some off of here and Ebay. out of 6 I think I got 4 nice ones. I followed what was posted on here about the liquid drain cleaner to soak the tail lenses in. WOW that works great! after their "bath" I polished the lens part , then cleaned with alcohol and a soft brush. the masking was lets say,something I could do with out doing again. I then scuffed the rest of the area with 320 sand paper and got them primed. I am having trouble finding someplace local to find the krylon dull aluminum so I think I am going to order some and try to get them painted soon.
