Wet Carpets - 1969 442

Wet Carpets. I encountered some rain whilst enjoying the Olds this past spring and I found the carpets were soaked. After the skies cleared and the interior came out. Enlisting the missus and a garden hose, the leaks turned out to be poorly sealed kick panel vents and a missing antenna grommet. A .39 cent grommet and a couple of sticks of 3M strip caulk was all it took. Cleaned out the inner fender wells from within the vent area as it was full of leaves and debre.

Before putting the interior back together, I pulled the “wall to wall” aftermarket sound deadening material put in by the previous owner as it had trapped some water. Prepped and cleaned all the floor pan surfaces and coated it all with with Por15, reapplied new deadening material and installed new carpet set.

New seals, new carpet, new car smell!

The trunk also leaked, enter the missus and the garden hose again... Leaking at three different spots... the body seams forward of the trunk lid, the convertible gutter and trunk weather strip.

The body seams got a refresh of seam sealer, repaired the crack in the gutter and glued down the weatherstrip. Now its almost water tight. Ha.

Good job. Nothing worse than wet rotting smelly putrid debris baking inside of a car.

For sure. Fortunately, it hadn't hit putrid...ha, just a bit humid.

We are 12 weeks into self-isolation and it is really upsetting me to witness Lori (my wife) standing at the living room window gazing aimlessly into space with tears running down her cheeks.

It breaks my heart to see her like this. I have thought very hard about how I can cheer her up. I have even considered letting her in - but rules are rules.
