Paint for black 68 Cutlass dash

Could anyone recommend a good spray paint for the lower dash of a 1968 Cutlass with black interior?

I have some cheap harbor, freight spray, guns, and an adequate compressor, but I’m not comfortable enough with them. I’d rather use spray paint, if there is a decent product out there.

I’ve also read in the forums about how some of the Cutlasses have a two “tone” dash. Is this the case with the 68? If so, is there a paint for both sheens of black?

The metal lower dash was semi-gloss. The upper by the windshield was satin for anti-glare. TCP Global might be able to package the correct paint in spray cans for you.

SEM Landau Black gives a pretty good semi gloss finish on the lower dash. You have to put it on in very thin coats.

Thank you allyolds68. I will grab a can and give it a test.

My apologies, I may be referring to the wrong part of the dash. I am looking to paint the glove box and plastic dash panel that holds the wipers, lights and ignition. Joe, let me know that the metal lower dash is semi gloss. The part I am looking to paint is the plastic lower dash housing. Is that the right term for this part? Was it a gloss or semi gloss from factory? Mine looks a little more flat black, but I’m sure it’s uv faded.

Would that SEM Landau black paint be a good choice for what I’m going to now call the plastic lower dash housing?

I used the SEM for both. I also used it for the inlay on my 4 speed console. Once you’ve painted the dash you have to go back and outline the raised trim and lettering with a chrome paint pen.

Thank you. I’m thinking about ordering a couple cans of the SEM Landau Black from Amazon.

Also, considering doing the color match from TCP Global.

Just for reference for those looking to do the color match thing from TCP.

The paint code is Ditzler DIA 9266. The sales person I talked to at TCP Global said a quart would be $126.99 (Acrylic Lacquer). If I want to spray it, the thinner would be $32.99 quart. If I would like the paint put into spray cans, they charge $14 per can and ship you the rest of the paint left in the quart. Of course, you can forgo the thinner if you have the paint put into cans. Sales person did mention that the low gloss paint tends to clog the nozzle, so you need to shake the can well and turn it over and clean the nozzles when you’re done Pretty sure these numbers were plus shipping. I didn’t get a shipping quote.

could you help me out with this? According to the 1970 chart it shows flat for upper and lower dash. Then list semi for lower as well. Which is it? It what are they talking about on the lower? The original paint on my rallye 350 seems pretty flat to me.

Thanks
