Horn button assembly?

Yes, I stupidly didn't make notes on how the horn assembly came apart, and now I can't figure out how to put it back together. For that matter, there may be a missing piece - Fusick lists a rubber "Cushion 1953-54 All with Deluxe Steering Wheel" that I didn't have. Maybe I don't have a Deluxe Steering Wheel; what's the difference between the deluxe steering wheel and a non-deluxe?

1953 88 - anyone have a diagram of the steering wheel/horn assembly?

I've got the contacts all sorted out - what I'm stuck on is the spring assembly for the horn ring.

More info

I think i've got the assembly figured out, mostly - but I think there's a plunger of some kind missing.

Here is the column with the mast jacket installed, the turn signal cam installed, and the shift lever in place. No problems yet, I think...

First.jpg

Here, I've set the steering wheel in place. Notice the hole at the top, with the yellow arrow pointing at it. There was nothing there when I took it apart, but...

Second.jpg

Here I've added what I assume is the horn contact/horn ring assembly retainer, along with the steering wheel retaining nut.

Third.jpg

This is the back side of the horn ring assembly. Screws go through the above retaining plate and into the four holes here.

Fourth.jpg

And finally, some mystery parts. There doesn't appear to be any secure, definite spot for either the spring assembly or the bushing to go. I can't find any place for the bushing to go at all. The only thing I can figure out for the spring assembly is that it might sit on top of the steering wheel retaining nut, and gets tightened down somewhat when the horn ring gets mounted. I don't really like this idea, as the spring assembly is just slightly too small to fit over the steering column. It will fit over the screw threads on top of the steering wheel retaining nut, but no further. There is a plastic retainer (insulator?) on one end, and a copper ring fitted on the other end.

Fifth.jpg

It seems to me there is a plunger of some kind missing that is supposed to go into that marked hole in the second picture. There certainly seems to be copper contact ring that a plunger could hit both at the top of the bore and the bottom.

Any ideas?

If that spring and plunger fits the steering shaft then it goes under the steering wheel and that other sleeve should have a plunger and spring and fit in that hole that you put that big circle around so you wouldn't forget that it was there... the other fella with the red and white '56 from Duncan B.C. had a similar problem but his assembly is a little different than yours..

Thanks, Yellowstatue! I've got the steering wheel that has the full circular horn ring. It appears to me that the existing spring arrangement I currently have is something a previous owner cobbled together to make the ring feel bouncy. I'm actually missing the lower cushion, the insulator, and the contact assembly.

This helps tremendously! Now I know what to look for, as well as how it fits together, and I can just close up the current arrangement (with no working horn) until I find the right pieces.

Those aren't part numbers, they're group numbers. You need to go to that section of an appropriate Olds parts book and then find the model year and application. That will have the part number. By the way, that's group 2.821.

Thanks Joe. This is where the problem starts. I sold my manual with the car but have an additional 1950-52 rocket wheel as a homage to the car I never wanted to sell. It’s that wheel I am missing the insulator on.

Does anyone have any pics of there wheel torn apart during resto so I can see what it is I am looking for. And see if it is worth remaking them?

any help greatly appreciated

This is what I have. No small rubber insulator thingy

So made this from 3mm solid rubber but not sure what size it should be. Whether the rubber should allow the bottom (larger tab) to make contact or not

This is a contact pin I tracked down off the web but not sure if this is correct. Should it sit flush with wheel boss as currently it stands proud
