72 Rallye steering wheel.

Hope someone can help me, Had to redo steering assembly and am having issues. Long and the short of it is when battery is hooked back up horn blows. I have a new horn contact assembly which states that the pin is to be shortened. though the instructions pertain to chevy the application ( part # ) is interchangable. The instructions state to cut pin to 3/4 inches for all cars after 1969. Partianing to Chevy. I have a 1972 442 Rallye wheel 4 spoke with center horn cap.

Any help would be great, would be nice to have horns working again

Read through this thread and see if it helps. The photobucket link shows photos of the parts to make sure you have everything in place correctly. John

Cool Thanks for the thread, One thing is interesting though, My 72 Assembly manual shows the contact install in this manor 1. spring is loaded into the cam tower 2. contact is installed over spring ( flared end in contact with spring ) 3. install insulator sleeve over contct pin and rotate to lock in cam tower. Am I missing something here? Your picture shows flared side outside insulator collar.

I'm not sure... but thinking about your situation I'd be looking at the horn button and the contact under it. The one with three plastic rivits holding the sandwich together. It shouldn't close the circut unless you press the center horn button. If your horn goes all the time I'd be suspecting there's a problem with the horn ring assembly. John

I did check the contact assembly looked to be good, spring is not contacting with mounting ring (3screws) but horn button clip seems to slide down to close spokes. going to try with shorter pin tomorrow.

The assembly manual is correct. Be sure the problem isn't a short in the horn ring itself. I've had problems with the plastic insulators deteriorating between the parts of the ring.

Thanks, I'm also suspicious of the contact also, The black spring ring looks to be sitting close to the screw tab with the elongated screw hole. Though it is not making contact when being held. I believe that when it is screwed down the ring might be making contact. Do you think this could be ruled out if I slip a piece of cardboard between the ring and the bad contact point? this allowing the rest of the ring to work normally. To test the ring.

I did re assemble the wheel with the new 3/4 stud but the horn still sounded as soon as battery was connected. Thus back to the ring #%$&%# !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if the horn doesn't sound when the contact ring is not in place, then that's likely your problem.
