DIY Backseat Bench Seatbelts

Hey all,

I am trying to get an idea on what type of seatbelts I can install on my 1968 Cutlass S. Anyone have any suggestions for possible three-point seatbelts or harnesses as I want to bring my young kids into the car, but I currently do not even have a single lap seatbelt in the backseat. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated my backseat is bench!

Thank you!

Are you sure the seat belts are not pushed down into the seat. I am sure some one has belts you can purchase if you start a parts wanted thread.

Not sure if shoulder belts were an option in the back in 68. You may need to make something custom.

They were not. Most car owners did not opt for 3pt belts in the front either.

All 1968 Oldsmobiles were federally required to have lap belts for every seating position. Non-convertibles were also required to have shoulder belts for the outboard front seat passengers. Outboard rear seat passenger seatbelts were a factory option and the hard points for those belts exist in the car. None of the factory belts were three point inertia reel belts. The shoulder belts were totally separate from the lap belts with dedicated buckles and straps. I would be wary of aftermarket three point belts that do not attach to the factory shoulder belt hard points.

From the Fisher Body Manual

Sorry, that is not correct. Front shoulder belts were a federal requirement for the outside passenger positions starting Jan 1, 1968. Olds incorporated them at the start of the 1968 model year. Rear shoulder belts were available under RPO AS5. Note the front shoulder belts in the Standard Equipment column on the left. This is from the 1968 SPECS booklet.

Sorry memory fade, I thought the first year was 69 for the Fed Mandate.
