Ignition switch R&R - is there an easy way?????

Like the title says.
Is there an easier way than what the service manual says with less disassembly????
Looks like it's going to be a royal P.I.T.A.

Be more specific....are you talking about the where the key goes or the actual switch itself?

OK, the key cylinder on a 70. Non-tilt, floor shift, automatic tranny.
I have a complete set of cylinders for the whole car, keyed for one key only.

Of course there's an easier way. It's called a slide hammer. Car thieves have used it successfully for years.

'Course odds are you'll bust the column doing that. R&R a lock cylinder is actually not that hard, just requires a steering wheel puller and a lock plate removal tool. You can probably rent both at a parts store, but you can buy them about as easy and then you have them next time.

Let's be clear that we're talking about the lock cylinder, not the ignition switch, correct? You need to pull the steering wheel and the lock plate. The web site below covers the lock cylinder removal as part of a repair that goes deeper into the column, but just stop at the lock cylinder step.

Thanks for the responses.
Joe, The link you provided with the clear pictures was the most helpful. It was still a M.F. to get removed, but it finally worked out.

Now on to the next PROBLEM.

NOTE: The domain name, "BuickPerformance.com" was purchased by GM and now leads to the main Buick.com site.

The new link is at "BuickPerfomanceClub.com."

Eric, you must have ESP or I reached out to you through mental telepathy. I was searching this subject 2 days ago and came across this thread from 2009. I was really disappointed when the link went to the Buick site. The new link is great information. Thanks for the update!
