Oil pan modifications
#4
I figured this had been done before and was hoping someone might have pictures they could share. Going to modify the pan for increased capacity and wanted to incorporate baffles as well.
Just looking for some ideas.
This is a boat application too.

Hey Joe, I will click off some pics of my pan and put them up for some reference.

It is something that has been done to Oldsmobile engines, specially 455s, by re-builders in the past if they have been really pushing the limits. For a stock engine or a standard rebuild it isn't necessary. The increased quantity of oil is to compensate for increased pump capacity which is to compensate for slow drain back to ensure good oiling of the main and rod journals. Kind of a dispute by some people if it is really necessary or if there are other ways to "skin the rabbit". Some people use restricted push rods, some people ream out the drain back passages in the heads, some modify the journals, some do all of the above.

Joe, if this is for your boat motor large pans (12 qts?) with baffles are common. I've had several including factory made like Moroso and others that took a automotive pan and modified it. I'll dig through my photos to see if I have pics of one. You might look at some aftermarket dealers like Summit to see if they have good pictures. John

Thanks for the feedback.
This is for the boat engine. Plan on reaming/smoothing the drain holes as well. Looked at the pans from Summit and similar for examples.
The reason I'm modifying the stock pan is clearance issues under the engine to the hull. It doesn't look like an aftermarket pan will fit. Also enjoy hand crafting improvements. Something my dad and grandfather taught me.
Want to keep oil circulating at extended 4500-5000 rpm runs.
