hidden vin numbers?

Was told by a friend today that my 68 Cutlass has vin numbers hidden all over it. One on the frame (which I've heard before) one above the heater box, and sometimes in the trunk lid weatherstrip channel. Are any of these true? He says the Police used these to i.d. stolen cars.

There is a VIN derivative stamped on the top of the frame rail, behind the left rear wheel. I have heard but not seen a VIN stamp on the firewall BELOW the heater box. I have not heard about one in the trunk weatherstrip channel. Of course, there are also VIN derivatives on the block and trans.

Idk about olds, but my 72 plymouth has them all over it. The fenders and the radiator core support (part of the frame on those cars) are 2 places that come to mind in a hurry.
