72 with 455/th400 and 10 bolt 8.5 (olds) I have this combo I can measure the shaft for ya tonight when I get home. What it's going to come down to I believe is if the trans has a long or short tail on it though. I'll measure just the DS from cap center to cap center.

RJ,

That would be awesome. Also both Trans are short-tail for anyone else who may have the 12 bolt O type combo 455/400 combo.

I just answered a similar thread 2 days ago. Search my name. rjohnson please post your findings Id like to see if my memory's on or off.. Dennys Driveshafts has a down load-able sheet showing how to correctly measure a drive shaft...engine/trans in car of course. You need to know what pinion yoke you have as well. The sheet shows how to ID the pinion yoke.

you were right on the manual 4 speed shaft I have a 69 with m-20 o type rear 56 inches yoke center to yoke center, Brian Measured a shaft he had for a 69 it was 55 1/2 inches yoke c/l to C/l but you would think that there would be a little wiggle room with the tranny yoke shaft? I mean that slides a decent amount inside the tranny?

Thanks, but I know how to properly measure a driveshaft and ID pinion yokes. The engine and trans are not in the vehicle,so I was looking for measurements without having to mock-up two engines and trans inside the aforementioned vehicles. It is a cool reference though. Eddie that 55 1/2 sounds about right if your speaking of a 69 455/400 short tail combo? Olds had way too many sizes, measurements, etc, but hey I love to drive them.

815Cutlass1972 - a comment stated politely. Your signature line has the word 'experience' spelled wrong in both locations. I try to be a good listener, and a good reader too.

Words in bold text and/or all capitals tend to emphasize exactly the opposite of silence and listening. Not sure if you knew this protocol.

To become an an effective listener, you need to learn the power of silence. Silence gives you the opportunity to think about what is being said before you respond and feed into group thinking without first-hand expierence on the subject at hand, because you heard from another who also have no direct expierence is just plain ignorant."

I figured some one would bite sooner or later. I'm sure you don't know the story behind it, but it had something to with people always trying to point out something that has nothing to do with the thread. Thanks Allan.

You're welcome. Hope you can find the measured lengths you're looking for. I tried to find the info in the Assembly Manual and CSM, but - it's not there. You likely checked that too?

Allan,
I checked the CSM with negative results also. I didn't think about checking the Assembly Manual though.

The Assembly Manual has the color coding (bands) for the drive shaft if that's important to you? 1969 - Sec 4 Page 110 there's a chart.

If I Recall. the 55 1/2" shaft I have was too long for the 69 vert with the 400 short tail trans and O rear. Something is telling me that shaft was closer to 53 or 53 1/2 inches. I may be wrong too.

Thanks Brian.
I had another guy tell me the 400 shaft should be 54 1/2" center of u-joint to center of u-joint. Almost there. Might have to put both engines and trans into the cars and measure. Bummer.

I'm sorry I couldn't measure the shaft on the car by myself and the wife refuses to crawl around on the zero degree garage floor with me. If I get a helper I'll post my results back. Even tried to C clamp the end of the tape to the shaft but every time I got to the cross pipe for the exhaust it would pop off as I tried to get past it. Tried to hold it with my foot too and just looked like a horizontal pole dancer.

That's too funny. Thanks for the A+ effort!
