cooling fan?
cooling fan?
Anyone tell me what higher output fan I can put on my 1949 88 with stock radiator and engine? I want better cooling so if anyone has a suggestion I will appreciate it...thanks, kad36
With cooler weather here on the desert it is fine...it's when the weather warms up over 100 degrees that the car gets hot with the a/c on and sometimes boils over...I am thinking maybe a five blade fan will help? Don't want to put an electric fan on this 6 volt system...The four blade fan doesn't seem to move much air even thou there is a shroud...
Where the heck did you find a 6 volt air conditioner? You can go to Speedway Motors and get a 6 blade fan that will fit. You will need to know the diameter of your current fan. A fan shroud will help a lot if you can find one. I have one off a 1952 model but it is promised to a member on here from England. You may want to check the condition of the radiator also. After I put the AC in my 54 I spend a lot of time (and money) getting it to cool down. I wound up have the radiator re-cored from a 2 core to a 3 core and adding an electric fan with a shroud. I still don't think it runs as cool as it should but it stays at 200 or below.

I'm not sure what the exact temp is when it runs hot but the needle on my temp gauge pegs and the coolant pukes from the overflow tube...The 6 volt cooler was installed at the dealer back in the day... I don't want to put an electric cooling fan on the radiator as I feel this will be more than the 6 volt system can handle... I already have two Optima 6 volt batteries side by side in the battery tray but still have the original puny generator. I will look into Speedway 5-6 blade fans, thanks...kad36
I made a typo on the fan which should be 6 blade. The 53 and later cars with factory air had a water pump with 8 blades on the impeller rather than 6. These pumps would fit you car. It might help a little.
Back in the day I had a 1953 Olds 98 with factory a/c and a Dynaflow trans couldn't drive it over 60 on hot days as the temp gauge would go out of sight...Was a nice car but couldn't get over the runaway overheating on this BadBoy...I will try a better fan first, my 88 already has a shroud but it still heats up ...might have to go to a new core?
