Air Conditioner Filter
Air Conditioner Filter
Well while reading up on how to repair my A/C unit in my 75 Olds Service Manual, it says to replace the carbon air filter every year, so I was like -.- I know for a fact that that filter hasn't been touched in 20 years, and up till today I didn't even know about it.
So any place where I can get one?
Its a 75 Cutlass, thanks

Not sure where you'd find one now. It was used 74-75 mostly in Tempmatic cars, then discontinued quietly. You know that "sweaty socks" odor you get sometimes when you first start the A/C? It was used to control that smell.
A lot of modern cars use a "cabin air filter", so you might be able to cross-reference it to a modern piece.

....and what's wrong with the odor of 'sweaty socks'??? Gives you the ability to pre-screen your future Mrs.......If she understands cars and the odor, she's a keeper. If she doesn't understand cars she'll spend the rest of her life looking for that pair you stashed somewhere in that car!!!
I realize this is a very old thread that I'm digging up here, but I have two questions on this subject:
1) Did anybody ever find any of these anywhere for sale?
2) My old one is pretty stuck in there and not coming out. I'm afraid it I pull any harder it will tear the paper bag the charcoal is in and make a HUGE mess inside my HVAC system. Any tips? Maybe partially disassemble the housing it lives in? No clue how to get in there.

I don't know of anyplace that has these filters. You might check Fusicks. If you are having trouble getting it out I suggest disassembling the housing instead of trying to force it out. As you said, you don't want to break anything.
After some digging, I found it in the 1974 and 1976 parts books.
Grp. 9.211 p/n 231767 filter pkg, evap case air (charcoal), 1974-76 all B-C-E opt C65 (Tempmatic) It listed for $10.20 in 1976.
My 76 Regency is a Tempmatic car and a very early build, but I've never seen this filter on it. Weird that you have a Cutlass with it as the parts book only lists it for 88-98-Toronado.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll see if I can figure out how to dissasemble the housing. It doesn't look easy with the engine in though, so it might have to stay put for the time being. One thing I was considering was cutting the top of it open and vacuuming out all the old charcoal. Then the empty bad should come right out. That would destroy any chances of cleaning it as Rickman suggested though. I'm going to google that now.
