Air cleaner base with HEI?

On my 70 Cutlass Supreme, I want to switch to factory HEI, which is not an issue except, the factory air cleaner base looks to be a clearance issue. I'm sure it can be modified to work, or the entire base be raised, or a carb spacer, etc. what (other than a chrome air cleaner) have some of you guys done?

Your best bet would be to find one from 1975 and up if you want a stock air cleaner housing. They offset it forward and dimpled the rear to clear the larger distributor cap.

On my 72 I used a plastic spacer on top of the carb. It was so long ago I bought it at Supershops. I just looked and Summit has a bunch of them. Here is the link:

We are probably dating ourselves Joe. I know it was about 23 years because I bought the Cutlass in 1993 and the HEI was one of the first things I changed on it. If I remember correctly, Supershops was a sponsor for Don Garlits.

Eddie Hill, actually. Wynns was the perpetual Big Daddy sponsor.

SuperShops went out of business in 1998. I used them a lot when I lived in SOCal in the 1980s. Of course, we all had this poster:

Joe did you ever see the documentary about Eddie Hill where he talks about his drag boat accident where he hit the water face first as over 100 mph? His eyes were completely bloodshot for over 3 months I think and there was a point to where he thought they would never clear up.

No, but I'd read the story in several publications.

Fortunately, the OP got his answer already, so I'm less concerned about getting this thread off the road, through the weeds, and nearly into a bridge abutment.

Eddie Hill was so much fun to watch; everyone loves the underdog. He always had the best engine explosions. I can still picture the one where his block split in half right down the middle.

I did the same thing in a different application.

Works great, and invisible when installed.

This is so true, for the KC guys as well.

"like" this thread.

Harvey, like Randy said in post #2 a late air cleaner should work just fine for you...or a spacer. Some folks have modified their housing as well, if you like to fabricate things by cutting and welding...its been done.

I'll lightly resurrect this thread, since I'm in a similar situation. I think I investigated all of the options, and in my mind, by far the neatest solution is a spacer between the carb and the air cleaner. For a 4 bbl, these spacers are readily available (5-1/8" dia.) from multiple sources. I believe the Cutlass Supreme should have a Quadrajet (didn't they all?)

For a 2-jet carb (3-1/16" dia.), I have not found a spacer made by anybody, anywhere, so I'm having to make one for my application.

I'm not positive about other years, but at least in '70 a 2-bbl 350 was a cost-saving option on the Cutlass Supreme. I used to have a '70 C/S 'vert and it had the 350-2bbl.

RPO L65, a $33.70 credit option in 1970 and 71 (RPO L32, a $33.00 credit in 1972). Also, the L33 455 2bbl was used in the SX package for a while.
