72 Cutlass fuel tank

I am in the process of replacing a faulty fuel sending unit and just got stuck removing the straps of the gas tank.

Apologies for asking a stupid question, but how do I remove the bolts? At the halfway point, I can't turn the bolt and the nut mounted on top of the slide nut seems frozen. I sprayed it with a healthy dose of lubricant but don't believe that's the problem. Incidentally, the assembly manual doesn't show a nut on the other side of the slide nut.

SOS. Thanks guys.

Sometimes the cage nut breaks at the top and just spins. If that's the case just put vice grips on the remains of the cage and back out the bolt. If the bolt won't turn at all then either keep soaking the nut or be prepared to cut it off. You can also try an impact gun - sometimes the hammering will free up the nut.

The threads above the nut are probably caked with dirt, rust, etc that makes the bolt bind when moving through the nut. If that is the case, do back and forth tigntening / loosening or try to clean the threads with a brush, spray solvent, etc.

Both slide nuts were in fact cracked. Got them off though finally.

I I was able to get both of them off by pretty much spring PB blaster while using my impact gun to tighten and loosen. That process took so damn long but they're off.

Yeah, I recall cursing how long those bolts were when removing the tank but then realizing why they were that long when reinstalling the tank.
