Angry '70 Cutlass S 350 Fan Shroud Install

Basic question, do I have to remove the engine fan (5 blade) to install a new fan shroud? Or is there a trick I do not know of.

It won't squeeze in between the radiator and the fan.

Yes. Must remove fan. Are you just replacing a broken shroud or adding one. If you're adding one where it didnt exist before, you will need the correct top plate. the standard top plate doesnt have provisions for mounting the shroud

Not that hard. Remove the fan at the waterpump connection. Place the shroud into position, but lay it back against the engine. re-attach the fan(loosely) to the waterpump. Bolt the shroud in place. Tighten the fan.

Thank you. How do I keep the fan (with clutch) from spinning while loosening the fan bolts. When I was 16 we braced the fan against a board but always worried about bending the fan blade. It's a five blade fan. Thought of even tying a rope around one the blades - I know - pretty stupid.

I typically leave the belts on to help hold the pulleys from turning. I use one box end wrench on the nut I am loosening, and a second box end wrench on a different nut to anchor the wrench, with the length of the wrench positioned so it rests against the water pump shaft. I can use that wrench as a lever to hold the pulley/fan from turning and work against the wrench that is loosening a nut.

I see that working for three nuts, but what about the fourth? There are no more other nuts to hold the fan from rotating.

Thank you,
Bill

Loosen but do not remove the third one, then loosen the fourth one using the third one as an anchor for the wrench.
