68 serial # and body tag don't match
Hi, my 68 442 convert tags don't match. Dash reads 34467, cowl reads 33667, I was told that this is common for a 68. If that is true where do I find documentation for this?

As I understand, trim tags from all of the assembly plants in model year 1968 used "36" on the trim tag instead of "44". The VINs indicated that it was a true 442. In model year 1969, again as I understand, all of the assembly plants went to "44" in the trim tag except for Lansing, which still used "36". I hope someone else steps in to verify this because my memory is a little weak.

PS: My '68 Lansing 442 vert uses "36" on the trim tag and "44" in the VIN.

I read it is well documented on 442.com. I also have a 68 442 built in Lansing and the body tag and the VIN don't match. It is obvious neither have been changed. My engine matches the VIN but 442.com says even that is not absolute. Apparently they were more interested in building cars then what us collectors would think 40 years later.

a) built in Canada
b) built in US for import to Canada
Costs a few bucks, but well worth the money.

Thanks for the info guys, I did the GM Canada thing and It came back as a 442.The guy doing the appraisal wasn't sure about the cowl tag and the vin not matching so this set him straight. Thanks again.

GM Canada Docs are bulletproof unless they've been faked, in which case a call to them will verify if they are legit.

Yes, this is right in the front of the 1968 and 1969 Fisher Body Manuals. As far as I can tell, all 1968 442s and most 69 442s came with 336xxx cowl tags but 344xxx VINs. My 68 W-30, 69 H/O, and 69 442 all have 336 cowl tags.
