Zinc in Oil?
Zinc in Oil?
I was told a few days ago I should be putting zinc in my '65 330 motor at oil changes because the newer oils do not have this. He said it will kill my cam and lifters if I Don't. Any Suggestions? I have 46K and have the heads redone to run on unleaded
Valvoline VR1 is the only oil I use. It is made with a high ZDDP content and formulated for flat tappet cams used in old engines, such as yours, and racing applications that demand the highest possible lubricity.
Do not add anything to it, just use it straight. It comes in 10W30, 20W50, SAE 30, SAE 40, SAE 50, and SAE 60. It is also available in conventional (gray bottle) and synthetic (black bottle). I suggest using the conventional in a street engine.

I've used Joe Gibbs HR-2 oil since the rebuild. It has zinc in it. http://joegibbsdriven.com/products/h...mance/hr2.html

I used one 10 oz bottle of ZPPD supplement to every 5 quarts at every oil change in the f-85 W31 till I went through the cases of newer Penzoil 10W30 I had on hand. Now I use EB high zinc oil (made by Torco) by the gallon from Sumitt, 10W40 in the race car and 10W30 in the f-85 W31.

Yes you're right, you need to use some form of ZDDP in your oil or you risk damage to the valvetrain. You can either buy regular or synthetic oil and add ZDDP (Eastwood, Cam Shield, other brands) or buy special oil that has it in there already. Choice is yours, either way your engine will have the protection it needs.
I use Shell Rotella T in my Olds and my truck, it contains 1200ppm ZDDP.
If you can find any, the OLD E.O.S. engine oil supplement GM part number is 1052367.
Recommended 1 oz. of E.O.S. per oil change for sufficient ZDDP protection.
There's been speculation/arguement the "new" E.O.S. that GM now supplies is different to protect the newer catalytic converters or something. Don't know how true that is, but I got enough of the old stuff to last me for years.

- Which oil has more zinc/ZDDP: VR1 or "Not Street Legal" racing oil?
Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil contains .13 percent of zinc and .12 percent of phosphorus compared to the Valvoline "Not Street Legal" Racing Oil which contains .14 percent of zinc and .13 percent of phosphorus.
VR1: 1300 ppm zinc / 1200 ppm phosphorus
Brad Penn: 1500 ppm zinc / 1300 ppm phosphorus (Southwest research lab)
1200 ppm zinc / 900 ppm phosphorus (Blackstone lab)
Decide for yourself. For me, the lower cost and availability of the VR1 makes it a no brainer.
Not anymore it doesn't. Rotella was one of the last holdouts in "regular" oils not marketed specifically for "racing", but it's my understanding that more recently a majority of the ZDDP has been taken out of Rotella. I use VR1 now, I like it because I can go right to the store and pick up a case.

I just saw this article on Hemmings. http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2...es/?refer=news

My last contact with Shell was in May 2011, when they stated that the Rotella T 15w-40 contains 1200ppm ZDDP. I hope it still does, at $13/gallon and available many places here, it's a good inexpensive oil.
This guy is ate up with oil testing. I know it's from a chebby site, but really good reading.
