Help please, sourcing parts
Help please, sourcing parts
Hi to the brains trust of CO
The olds started making some horrific noises when starting cold, have taken the old girl to the mechanic and found that a few of the valve seats have gone which is the cause of the problem, poor compression at the moment as well. In addition the radiator needs some help as theres some serious fluid being lost. Mechanic has given this all the once over and given me a list of things to source to keep the cost down.
I need to source a few items from the states as in oz these aren't readily available. If someone can point me in the direction of a website where i can get these (new items or remakes) I'd appreciate it. All these parts are for a 71 cutlass
I require;
water pump
radiator hose/s
lower ball joints
i've tried looking on OPG but i haven't had a heap of luck.
If i can just get new items i'd appreciate it as i want to get on to this quickly rather than sourcing original older parts from all corners of the globe.
Thanking you in advance
Russ

Just hit one stumbling folk, got a lead from one of the good people to check fusicks and they have pretty much everything i need.
The water pump has two options- with or without A/C.
The car has an aircon fitted but i was told it was aftermarket, it has the unit underneath the drivers seat. Which water pump should i get?

The AC cars have an HD water pump with a 6 blade fan and fan clutch. Does your car have that? Or does it have the 4 blade fixed fan with a 2" extension off the front of the pump?
If you have the 4 blade - non AC, water pump neck is short
If you have the 6 blade - AC , water pump neck is around 6.1"
I think you're looking at this?
Just be aware that Fusicks shipping charges are astronomical. I know because they shipped to me and I'm only in Canada. You might want to check Rock Auto. They have low prices on parts, but to get the best shipping all parts have to come from the same warehouse. FYI, Fusicks, OPGI, Year One all tend to have higher than avg pricing on their parts as of late. The killer for you is shipping. If you know someone in the US, get them to buy and ship to you, the price would prolly go down a lot, because O'reilly's parts prices are rock bottom. ex: water pump - 33.00
If you decide to start swapping stuff around from non HD cooling to HD, you also have to change some pulleys, so stick with ^^^ what you have.
Interesting. Your signature pic says 71 Olds Cutlass but the car has 72 front grills.

Thanks for the help Allan, that spells it out perfectly for me.
The car i bought as is about 3 years ago, I know what you mean with the grille, i have picked up on it. It was restored here in australia as a bar find but the previous owner wasn't an olds enthusiast, i think thats why the current grille is as it is. I like the black anyway and will probably keep it like this.
Thanks for your help buddy, i'm used to horrific shipping prices here but no contacts in the US. I'll find out how much it is but I've come to expect anything to cost a bit. I buy supplements, clothing and other things from the US also and anything with any weight can sting a bit. Thanks for the tip though, much appreciated.

hi chuck
the cars already been to the mechanic and been up on the hoist, the guy i used only does older US cars so its in good hands.
Yep you got it, noisy on start and noise goes away after 5 mins at idle. No smoke from the exhaust. I knew from before the valve seats needed to be addressed but it wasn't causing noise at that stage. This was about 6 months ago and at that stage my previous mechanic said he'll have a look at the next service but he's in the process of moving, so i've found someone else who saw the car the last couple days. The car gets run once a fortnight, its not a daily driver.

This is one of those times where the MAW's (might as wells) kick in. Since your changng the water pump, you are just a few bolts away from a timing set replacement. You are also going to need a full upper gasket set since the heads will be coming off. You also may need a set of lifters, cam, and some rocker perches. Inspect everything well after disassembly prior to ordering parts.
For the front end, since you are going to replace the lower ball joints, I'd also replace the lower bushings and sway bar links. You are also just a few bolts away from doing the upper control arm bushings and ball joints. These parts are not expensive, the job is just time consuming.

folks just an update. Well impressed with fusicks, 3 working days (including yesterday being a public holiday) parts landed on my doorstep in perth western australia. Used to waiting 3 weeks for supplements and clothing. Wish everything else i ordered was this quick. Thanks for the other options folks, will explore them next time i order something.

Haha. maybe he saw the aussie address and knew if you muck us about we'll skin you and wear you as a hat hahaha. Well packed, everything was in a box but they used a lot of paper so nothing was moving. Pretty happy overall with the service. Was expecting to get bent over for the postage but for the weight 100 bucks was pretty good.
