Mystery cable

I was working on getting my radio out of my 72 Cutlass and I had to take the A/C duct workout to get to it. Behind the accelerator pedal and directly above it, count what appears to be a cable. Any idea what it is?

If your car has a TH350 transmission then you may be looking at the kickdown cable. It's attached to the gas pedal, correct? John

Looks like a kickdown cable to me too.

X3. Yes, it's attached to the gas pedal. The black plastic bale holds the trans kick down ball in the right position, so if your kick down is working right, leave it alone.

Please consider me an idiot when it comes to mechanical stuff. What's a kick down cable and it doesn't appear to be connected to anything. Maybe thecable is broken? Please look closely at that picture I uploaded.

Okay -I found out what a kick down cable does on the web. They are rebuilding my carb next week and I'll make sure they are aware of this problem as it appears that the cable is broken off from the foot pedal.

Rick, my turn to risk sounding stupid I know some years the kickdown cable went to the carb, but other years it went from the transmission to the throttle pedal. I just don't remember which years were which.... but as I'm typing this I think yours should go from the transmission to the throttle pedal. Otherwise... there would be no need to have it attached to the throttle. I'm going to dig through the Chassis Service Manual to see if I can find the answer. Maybe another member who knows for sure can speak up?

Your mystery cable goes to the transmission. There are 2 cables that attach to the gas pedal. One is for the throttle, the other is for the transmission kickdown. The transmission also takes a vacuum signal off the throttle/vacuum and the TCS automatically advances the timing for heavy acceleration.

Rick, if it ends up that you need a new cable I've got some core TH350 transmissions. I'm sure I could come up with a good cable for you. John
