1970 Olds 442

What kid did you guys use to install your aftermarket single DIN stereo's??
Anything on Ebay or anywhere someone can point me to ??

I've been looking all over Ebay and it's all by application.
I'm trying to find a kit for my dash to put a stereo in, but not
having much luck. Most of these older muscle cars used the
same kit since it's just a single DIN rectangular hole , nothing fancy.
My stereo hole is FUBAR'd so I am going aftermarket modern.

I've even checked Walmart and they don't have it. :screwup:

I doubt you'll find a car-specific kit. Probably a universal mounting kit. Since yer hole is already cut out, the metal mounting frame that comes with the new stereo ought to mount in there and sufficiently retain the head unit. Check with a car audio shop, they deal with this every day.

Some guys use 8-track housings for DIN stereo heads and gages, but you'd also have to get the 8-track A/C duct finishing panel.

 

I agree, you probably won't be able to find a specific kit for your car. If your dash wasn't messed up I would suggest a radio made by... USA 60 I believe. I would have to double check my favorites on my home computer. It is a modern stereo with an MP3 adapter that fits into the dash where the original radio was.

The dash is already destroyed. I would just get a universal kit and go from there. I would probably go to a best buy or something that specializes in aftermarket systems to see about what is available for a clean non damaging install for the rest of the system. I know you can get a decent stereo installed without hacking the car to bits doing it. My project is not there yet, so I am just not sure where or what yet.

 

If you want a stereo and keep the original look there are a couple of aftermarket manufactures on the internet that make stock looking radios the fit in the original location and look like the original radio they can even be hooked up to disc players http://www.vintageautoradio.com/ is an example there are several others just search the internet. I have one in my 57 Olds perfect fit and easy to install

I'm fine with a modern stereo in it.
Especially not paying $595 for one of those. But thanks.

That's what I was thinking.....I just need to see something in person I guess
I'm a big time internet shopper so I feel handicapped and I might have to actually shop LOCALLY!!!!!

 

Most of the different applications are to accommodate the different control shaft hole spacing and shaft depths, since your dash has no holes........

All you have to be concerned with is depth of the radio itself, being sure that it will not interfere with what is behind it and above/below it behind the dash.
