Here you have it....German engineering at it's finest. So what's it doing in an Olds forum? At the Olds Rocket Roundup held in "OLDS" Alberta Saturday July 18, this is the car that farfenugened it's heart out for the engine blow.

No coolant, no oil. How long will it last? So to start with, it was just going to be a Let it Run and see how long. But that was taking to long. So run up the revs and see vat happen, ya?

How long do you think? Anyone who was there knows the answer.....

i seen a chevette go for over 5 hours at a local car show. it was at idle the entire time.

jensenracing......uh... a Chevette...uh.....you said a Chevette......damn, I didn't think those things would run for more than 5 minutes. Heck, if you ran it in the winter, it would run the tank dry and still have no heat in the car. I had one and it was a POS. 1976 (first year) 1.6 no power go nowhere 4 speed...Maybe I should have tried the engine blow on it.... at the time it was the only new car I could afford. Shoulda gone for broke and got a real car. Man I could have bought a 1970 442 for less than 1/2 what I paid for it and it would have been better. But you know how the insurance was then too.

I heard of someone trying that on a Gremlin before it was junked... After what seemed like an eternity, they put a brick on the gas pedal and it lasted about another 10 minutes...

 

You know the only time these types of cars would run this long was when they knew they were about to be "JUNKED"

 

Gas or diesel? When I was younger an acquaintance of mine would take his diesel Jetta to the local gravel pits and get real air time with it, then drive it to work on Monday.

LOL. nobody there had more than 1 hour on it. the guy that guesed the 60 min won the pot. my sister had a chevette and it ran good but the front shocks were drove right through the hood. POS is right.

 

Well they ran it for a while on idle but it was taking too long?? how long til they got impatient? I am guessing 30 minutes then they reved it up and it blew at 51 minutes.

 

I am not too surprised. Those are supposed to be sturdy cars. Germans sure know how to build them.

 

Well if it was a diesel it would run all day. A loosy goosy gas engine, maybe 88 minutes

It was a gas powered Jetta. Have no idea how many miles were on it but it was going to the boneyard anyway. So here's for all the guesses so far, BIGJERR is the closest, Red Delta-getting cooler, chequenman-freezing

Yup, it ran for 30 minutes before it got revved up. Was just taking too long to turn into an easy bake oven. So there you have it: definitely more than 30 minutes, but less than 42. So what's the magic number? minutes and seconds count-this was a 50/50 event and it was worth $$$. BTW every single minute was bought, there was no shortage of takers who wanted to see das auto meltdown. Personally? I'd like to see it like the Syntec commercial where they rev the **** out of it from go until it locks.

Most cars at an engine blow you can tell when they start to go tic tic tic tic.... Dis Jerman Farfenugen machine?? No tic tic tic. In Jermany ve haff vays of making it "toc" instead. I know, that's just terrible.

 

i was wrong, i talked to a friend today and he said it was just over 3 hours. i don't know why i thought it was 5. sorry.

 

No sweat, I have no idea how a Chevette lasted that long......wonder how long it would have lasted "under pressure".

 

Ok I somehow managed to guess they let it idle for 30 minutes and without any fluids in the gas motor she would have been pretty hot when the revved it up.How about 38 minutes 20 seconds?

 

In reference to an engine locking up and not having any tic tic tic to clue you in before hand. Wouldn't the lifters already be making noise? Without any oil I would think the valve train would be real noisy from almost the beginning. At any rate, I had a 455 lock up on ey and it just died without warning, I mean just stopped running completely. I didn't take it apart but after towing it home I found the crank would not turn so it was probably a failed main bearing. I think I was driving about twenty mile per hour when it happened and had no warning at all. It was in a '76 98 Regency I once owned. In retrospect I wish I had not gotten rid of it but at the time I needed something to drive daily and did not have the room or money to mess with it.

 

That was probably the best car you've owned since the 78 Delta 88.

Wolfman, you're the closest guess and you're right that it was a little hot from the idling. But it didn't get really hot and smokin until it got revved up. Did you by any chance go out and find a similar das auto to try this out on??? And the winner gets.........I dunno....a chance to do this again next year?? Instead, how bout a road trip to "Olds" (honest to God, that's the name of the town) for the next Rocket Roundup. This was my first time to the show and it was a ton of fun. Great cars and great guys and gals. Not as crowded as a big meet.

If I am not mistaken I have been through Olds Alberta and when I worked in Regina for case International shipped tractor parts there.my sister and brother lived in Edmonton and I almost got lost at west edmonton mall in the parking lot trying to find car was a task.Sister lived on 103rd not far from jasper Ave. I lived out west for 13 years and travelled to Edmonton , Calgary and Winnipeg a lot to visit family and friends.Still remember those cold , cold winters. I was hoping I won an Olds from Olds

 

Case tractor parts? Yup, I'm thinkin it would have been quite the supply / demand route with Case, Massey, Intl Harvester, Allis Chalmers, and John Deere. Olds is quite a farming community.

I'm not a big fan of WEM myself - too big and busy. Cold winters? What the heck are you talking about? We don't get cold winters here, we just live far enough north to have "hard water" most of the time . Nice to see that you've been around and still remember your landmarks. Cheers!

 

Yeah big tractors and combines made for big parts.Worked in the parts depot in Regina for 12 years.before that I was in Calgary for a few months living with my brother in the NE section on Rundleside Cresent. every street was Rundle something. Before that I worked for McMillan Blodell cutting trees in B.C That was when I was 20 and lots of energy but hard work .Now My sister and 2 brothers live in Courtnay on the island , my oldest brother lives in Sun City CA
