i am looking to put some new rims and tires my 64. 98 2 door coupe what would fit inside the rear spats 15 x 8. positive 6 or backspacing size would be?

 

Stock rims had zero offset. Positive 6mm is about 1/4" - with the tire centerline pushed inboard that much relative to the wheel mounting flange on the axle. Depending on the tire size you pick, this may or may not be a problem. No way to even guess without know the tire size.

15x8 is overkill on a 235/60-15 tire. 7" wide is plenty of rim. Your bigger problem is that a 235/60 is only 26" in diameter. You'll have to send out search dogs to find them in the cavernous wheel wells of that Ninety Eight. The factory tires on this car were 8.50x14, which were 28.10" in diameter. 9.00x14 was an oversize option at 28.70" diameter. I'd suggest using 235/70-15 tires, which are just under 28" in diameter. I have this size on the front of my 1967 Delta 88 on 15x7" wheels which also have 6mm offset - that was all I could get in the American Racing TTO series. If you want a "deep dish" look, you need negative offset, but this comes at the expense of pushing the tire outboard, towards the fender lip. While it looks cool, it usually poses fitment problems.

 

I put 235-70-R15 tires on my 63 Starfire using 94-96 Chevy Caprice 9C1 police wheels, 15 by 7, which bolt on and fit easily. Then later I upgraded to 94-96 Chevy Impala SS alloys, 17 by 9, with 255-50-R17 tires, they also fit perfectly with no clearance issues, but you will need to install longer wheel studs. (Not an easy thing to do)

 

What bolt pattern did each wheel have ?
