'68 Air Cleaner Part Number

I am sure this has been discussed before, but can someone please confirm the correct air cleaner P/N for a 1968 Olds 442, 400 engine and 4bbl carb, automatic w/o AC? Is it 6424834 and is it stenciled in white on the side of the air cleaner?

I have also seen air cleaner P/N 6424835 stenciled in white. What is the difference?

6424834 is for the police model 350ci or 40ci engine and carries a highway patrol sticker. 6424835 is for the '68 4-4-2 model, either automatic or manual transmission, and uses the "OLDSMOBILE 442" pie plate on top of the air cleaner cover. I'm not sure if the highway patrol air cleaner is red or black. The 4-4-2 air cleaner is definitely red. Both have stenciled (or silk-screened) labels but the part numbers between the 4-4-2 and highway patrol numbers for that stenciled label are different.

Forgot to ask, do you think the 6424834 police model air cleaner would fit and work properly on my '68 442 400 4bbl engine? Or did the police model have some unique design elements other than just color?

Good question. I don't know the answer, either! Perhaps someone else does and I hope they chime in!

According to the assembly manual the 6424834 is the 350 4bbl OE air cleaner so it has the smaller snout. The police package uses the same air cleaner. It will work and they look almost the same as the 6424835 OG (which the police package uses in the 400)

It's in the assembly manual section 6-1 pages 103 and 104

Ok... Understand. If the air cleaner 6424834 OE is for the 350ci engine. What would be the correct air cleaner P/N for a stock '68 Olds 442, 400ci 4bbl carb? And would it be OE or OG?

thanks,
Phil

6424835 OG is the correct air cleaner for the 4bbl 442 (non W30)
