Whats This, Anyway??

Im going the replace sending unit, (1972 Cutlass Supreme), and wondered if anyone has any preliminary advice for me, before I begin.
The job looks pretty straight forward, but I dont know what to expect with the top side that I cant see yet. And what the heck are all these lines connected to? Ive seen the oval shaped can- thing behind the seat, never knew what it was. I assume they are vaccuum related, and 3/8" , but thats the best I got so far....

That is part of the evaporative control system for the fuel tank. That's the top of the separator can. The three lines together connect to vents on the tank. The other line runs to the evap canister under the hood.

Those are fuel lines and not vacuum lines. Be sure to use the correct material when (if?) replacing them.

Thanks, this is most helpful. I also wanted to post this diagram I found, that depicts the system perfectly
