OK looks to be on top of the starter, 455, orient yourself with the motor mount and the driver side W manifold. There is a stud with nut with washer loosely attached. Partially obscured by motor mount attachment point.

What is it? Missing something? No prizes just your satisfaction for sharing knowledge, car runs and drives great.

Thanks and hope everyone is staying safe, please no ingesting or injecting disinfectants.

My guess from the CSM is that it is this stud with a loose bolt. Should it be tightened? Thanks

Not a problem. It is a starter bolt holding the starter together and it has a threaded extension used for a support brace. Some cars use it and some don't.

Yep, I think you're right.

If you are talking about the second nut and lock washer on that stud that holds the starter together, someone added that - likely the rebuilder that the starter came from. It is not factory. I've never had an Olds with anything attached to that stud.

Thank you for the replies, so it may have been used on some cars but that’s not certain, I’m curious what it may have been used for - and if so on what cars.

Thanks again!

That stud is likely a Chebby thing cuz they use a brace that supports the end of the starter. An Olds starter would just have a hex head, no stud.
