It won't hurt. I've actually surfaced the cover with a disc sander to get the pits out.

I Used A Sander
6 in Round D/A for auto body with 80 grit and painted the cover with engine enamel after degrease and paint prep.

I personally think this is an area that I prefer the Chevrolet style.
