stalling noob

I am new to the hobby, I recently bought a 1966 toronado. I refreshed the quadrajet that came with it and now I have a problem with stalling when I get off the throttle from WOT...any suggestions ? it is a 425 the previous owner put hei distibuter on, what should I check first? previous owner also has a single exhaust set up, can that be part of the problem?

The last thing fixed is where you look first...

Carb probably needs some adjustments such as secondary air valve spring wrap, or the vacuum break is missing or inoperative.

oh... OFF the throttle FROM wide open...

Hmmmm.... that is weird... idle set too low?

How does one even have single xst on a '66 Toro?

Did you give the body of the carb
a good 12 hour soak in say Berryman's
carb dip?

I dipped and cleaned the carb and set specs to standard as in the adjustment tables that came with rebuild kit. I think last owner was to cheap to spring for proper muffler. I have proper exhaust ordered. When I set idle I set with car in drive? sorry but I'am new to carbs..

68-70 single exhaust Toronado mufflers are a lot easier and cheaper to find than the correct double-in/double-out 66-70 dual exhaust unit.

Does this carb have a dashpot on the throttle arm? If so, it may need adjustment to keep the throttle plates from closing off too far too quickly. Spec should have been in the rebuild kit instructions. If not, let us know- many of us have 1966 CSMs.
