slip joint specs

slip joint specs

I had new u-joints, slip joint installed, and drive shaft balanced on my '71 442 M20 4-speed. Now the slip joint bottoms out in the transmission and still a 1/4" too long to install in the companion flange. I didn't get the old slip joint. I read it needs 3/4" to 1" of clearance. Anyone have the specs for an original slip joint? The shop is telling me that's as short of slip joint they have. I don't beleve it.

By slip joint, do you mean the front yoke that slides into the tran? If so you must have the wrong size.

Are working with your original driveshaft? The ‘71’s don’t have a companion flange, just u-joints. A pic would be helpful.

My guess was they installed the longer T400 yoke instead of the shorter yoke that was originally installed.

The T400 yoke would be standard for the Muncie, and apparently he was installing the original driveshaft.

It turns out the slip yoke was correct. It had to do with how I was installing the driveshaft. I didn't have the shock studs attached to the rear-end which allows it to swing to maximum downward travel. That shortens the distance between the pinion yoke and the transmission. I jacked the rear-end up, reattached the shocks. The driveshaft went right in and has the proper clearance from the transmission to the slip yoke.
