Hello there. I have been messing around online researching my 68' 4-4-2 and I stumbled upon the Hagerty vin lookup. After I put in my vin 4 different cars showed up. One was a H/O, one was a 400 2bbl sport coupe, and the other two were 400 4bbl sport coupes but one was listed with 350 hp the other with 325 hp. I believe mine is the 400 4bbl sport coupe with 350hp as mine is a numbers matching manual and from my understanding they had more hp than the autos. I have the title and bill of sale which both match the vin on my car. Should I be concerned that multiple cars showed up? Thanks for the help!

 

I think that's just a generic tool. I wouldn't worry about it.

In 68, the 442 stick car was rated at 350, automatics 325 GHP.
That eliminates the H/O as it was a 455 automatic car, 390 GHP, and those VINs are known and tracked by HOCA
The 400 2BBL with a 344 VIN is a Turnpike Cruiser rated at 290 GHP; all were automatics.

I wouldn't worry about it.

 

Most of those third party VIN or cowl tag lookup sites are riddled with errors. Don't lose a lot of sleep over it. For the record, in 1968 there were SIX engines offered in cars with a 344... VIN, and in no case will the VIN or the cowl tag tell you which one.

400 2bbl 290 HP - RPO L65 Turnpike Cruiser option (262/274 cam, C heads)
400 4bbl 325 HP - RPO L78 standard equipment in all 442s with automatic trans (262/274 cam, C heads)
400 4bbl 350 HP - RPO L78 standard equipment in all 442s with manual trans (286/286 cam, C heads)
400 4bbl 360 HP - RPO W30 (328/328 cam, D heads)
455 4bbl 390 HP - RPO W45 Hurst/Olds non-A/C cars (308/308 cam, D heads)
455 4bbl 390 HP - RPO W46 Hurst/Olds A/C cars (285/287 cam, C heads)

Note that while the W45 and W46 engines were both rated at 390 HP, how they were able to do that with different cams and heads remains a mystery of the marketing department.
