help on vin......

My vin only has 13 characters. Every site I have looked at says its gotta have 17. this is the vin on the original title that I got when I bought the car. Here is the vin: 338275z116825. any help would be appreiciated.

Ted, your probably fine. I know the cars in the 1960's and early 1970's only had 13 characters in the vin. I don't know when they changed it, but yes the newer cars have 17 characters. John

1981 was the first year for 17 character VINs.


Your VIN decodes as follows:

338275z116825

3 = Oldsmobile
38 = Cutlass
27 = 2-door post coupe
5 = 1965 model year
Z = Fremont, California assembly plant
116825 = Production sequence number at that plant

^^^THIS. The on-line VIN tracking sites don't bother with older cars using shorter VINs. Frankly, the tracking data on those older cars doesn't exist.
