sad sight
Saw this the other day coming out of work. It got me to thinking. The newest Oldsmobile is now 8 years old. The last 98 was made in 1996 I think? So the newest one is now 16 years old. If you see one on the road at all, it'll likely look more or less like this one. A beater. Kind of a sad legacy.
Isn't it fun think about what a 2012 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight might have looked like?

I always liked those years Ninety Eights- after those stubby upright 85-90 jobs, these cars finally LOOKED like a Ninety Eight again.
Shame they have survived so poorly. Guy I work with uses one for a driver though to be fair, it is in much nicer shape than the white one pictured. There actually used to be several of them in the plant parking lot, and my Aunt Rene drove a 95 until a car pulled out in front of her and totalled it. Now she drives an 04 Alero coupe. She will often say her Alero is OK, but it ain't no Ninety Eight!

Well, life goes on, as my brother just traded in his wife's 04' Olds mini van for a Chevy Equinox. Remember when he got it, as priced right with longer warranty, and really loaded with the goodies. My daily 09' Pontiac G6 GXP's headed for the same orphan status too. But meanwhile enjoy dusting lots of big blocks with this thing.

Stranger than fiction dept: the local shopper paper has a 60K mile 91 advertised this week. $1450 and says nice car. I'm tempted to call about it in the remote possibility it is a Touring Sedan in nice shape.
My luck it'll be a ratty white or silver one, neither of which are high on my list of desirable colors. A phone call is cheap though.

Unfortunately, most of the Olds I see around here are starting to look beat up. Really nice ones stand out now at this point.
I would say a pretty good testimony as to how good they were since most are still daily driven and now 10-20 years old.

Does anybody remember the 88 (I believe it was 88) Cutlass Ciera XC? I was a late teen back when mom bought one brand new. Besides being a 4 door (I was a teen remember), this was an amazing vehicle. It was the 3.8 and had overdrive (auto obviously). It was a super powerful quiet cruiser that idled at 65 (it seemed). Great for the shore trips (Sellersville, PA to Cape May, NJ). I took 3 friends skiing in the Poconos one winter and impressed all of them with the wheel squealing pick-up it had! Compare that to the same gas mileage on my 90 Plymouth laser 2.0 with 16 valves that had zero low end power and only some high end power (compared to the Olds)!

Here are some pics of a nice 92 (I think!) Cutlass. A guy in the business complex where I work, drives it. It's in good shape. Don't know how many miles are on it. Shame he drives it in the snow and salt. It's gold, but the gray day made the pics look faded out.
