On a cold day in WI i spent my time block sanding the primer on my 71. the body work turned out nice and blocking the primer went well. I am please with how strait the car is. Time will tell after it is painted. here is a picture I took at the end of my work session

Looks like you have your work space tarped off. Great idea for limiting dust etc. Was wondering though if you can bring in a propane bottle and heater to warm the space you're working with. If you leave that hood too long without a primer on the sanded down areas, it will start to rust even in the cold. There's always moisture in the air. A heated area at least until the primer is on and dried will save some repeat work later. Just a suggestion.

Hope you got someone helping you moving that hood around. Great work - keep it up.

 

No problem with the heat. I have a modine on the cieling and a programable t-stat to control it. The concrete floor stays at 48 degrees and when I am working in the garage I run it up to 55. this is a comfortable temp to work with a sweatshirt on.

I fortunaley have a neaighbor/gearhead who likes to come over and help. all of the two person jobs like removing the hood get done when he is here. I have also been lucky to not have flash rust on bare metal this time of year. I stripped the hood to metal a few weeks ago and primed it on thursday.

The plastic tarp does a nice job to keep the dust on the dirty side of the garage. I use thin painters plastic as a curtain and throw it out when I get the garage out of "body shop" mode.

when the car goes to the painter in Feb I will spend a day with a vacum and a water hose getting the dust off of every thing.

I have reconditioned a couple of cars in the past but I am the most excited to get the Cutlass back on the road. It still amazes me how fun it is to drive this car!

Looking good, what kind/brand of primer?

 

I have a local paint supply shop that sells Valspar products. The primer is thier tintable Direct to metal high build primer. I dont have alot to compare it to since I am new to body work. It goes on well and sands easy with 220 git to stat and then 320 and the 600 wet. On my last project the owner of the shop made house calls to be sure my body work would be straight. His service is why I buy from him.

I heard you are going through a cold snap, It was warmer in Green Bay yesteday than your area of the country

Another productive day in the garage. the doors are off and the galss is out of them. The entire car is sanded/scuffed and ready for sealer.

I spent the afternoon doing some detail painting in the engine bay. The underside of the hood is painted as is the cowl and screen. I have a few weekends to get the rest finished before I bring the car to the painter.

The photo I send will have color on it!
