noisy speedometer 76 Custom Cruiser

searched but did not find anything on this, seems that the light ticking that started in the cold weather has turned into a downright squeak at 40 miles per hour or so. Any place I can access to lube the cable? Cruise connection? It's making me crazy!

My 70 Cutlass was squeeking. A mechanic I know has a special grease gun for lubing speedometer cables from the transmision. The cable cannot be removed from the sheath. Grease is forced up into the cable sheath. The other point of access is in the dash. Not sure if the same system was used in 76 but I suspect it is.

You can't pull the cable out of the sleeve, from the bottom, but should come out if you take the speedometer out and pull the cable out that direction and lube it up with white grease. My VC does the same thing, to lazy to fix I guess. Like you said, mine goes away after it gets warm. Mine is a 72 so pertty easy to get to. Not sure about you car?

This is what I did for my 72 also. I am not sure if yours comes out the same way though.
If it does, pull it all out, clean the old solidified grease from the cable with WD40 and regrease with lithium grease, and cerefully reinsert. Do not kink it at all - be gentle. Getting it to reingage in the tranny might take a little patience but do not force.

You can try oiling it, or greasing it but that's just a temporary fix. If there's a speedometer shop near you, try them. They should be able to make you a brand new cable from scratch, for less than you'd think.

Yes you may - that is an easier way!
I am pretty sure the one from the tranny will come out that way. Not sure on the other end, but is well worth a try. I think it will come out that way.

If the noise persists after cable lube, the cruise unit may need an internal lube as well.
