Question noisy valvetrain

I have a 64 Olds cutlass with the 330 high compression. Just installed a new cam and lifter kit, plus new valve springs from Mondello. Little bigger cam than stock. Put it all together and walla, noisy valve train that was not there before. Called Mondello and said to buy new adj. rocker arms. Friend of mine said with some new bigger cams, you may experience more than normal valvetrain noise. It's not like the lifter tick noise I had which is why I did a new cam and lifters. It's consistent throughout both sides front to rear. Any ideas? The valve springs Mondello sold me are much stiffer and taller than the stock ones. I called Mondello and they assured me these are the correct springs.

Did you replace rocker assy's, and is it all the valvetrain or just some.

I'm not sure with the 330's but the 394's the Rocker Arm Shaft can only be installed one way for Oil lubrication, as the shaft picks up the oil and circulates it from the under side of the Shaft from ports in the saddles of which they're mounted in. I know the 394's get rather noisey if the Shafts are turned 180 degrees and don't get the oil they require.

Is your 330 shaft mount or pedestal mount.

64's come with the rocker arm bridge assy and no I did not replace them. Sounds like all the valvetrain.

Now you have declared that your 330 has a Rocker Shaft and to replace the Cam you removed the Shaft, have you possibly installed the Shaft so the oilers are upside down and not getting enough oil to your top end????

just pulled my valve covers off and ran engine. my 330 oils through the push rods and getting plenty of oil to the rocker arms.

So your Pushrods are hollow, 394's are solid and I guess that's the reason the Rocker Arm Shaft is designed with oilers like they do, and get their lubrication from the under side of the Shaft.

Try longer pushrods, longer by the difference between your new lobe lift and the original lobe lift.

Which is it, bridge or shaft? Most 1964 330s came with #1 heads and shaft rockers, but late production motors got #2 heads and bridge mount rockers.

In any case, does this cam have a reduced base circle? If so, you either need adjustable rockers or longer pushrods to make up the difference. Otherwise, you'll get noise.

valvetrain

Hey Joe, it's been awhile since our last thread. I'm still looking to rid myself of valvetrain noise. I think I have exhausted all ideas from friends and others in the hobby. After replacing my cam and lifters with one from comp, I purchased longer pushrods so I can shim down to adjust the rocker arm shaft. I'm about .060 preload on lifters which puts me in the middle of piston travel and still noise. Is there something else I'm missing? Are there any secrets with the rocker arm shaft. I measured the base circle, it is smaller so with longer pushrods and proper preload it should be quiet, right??? any ideas would be helpful
thanks
