Newspaper found under the carpet, '67 Toro
Just an odd thing I ran into today as I finally pulled the rear seat out for deep cleaning of this Toronado I've had for a few months. As the motor is scattered over several machine shops, I started the small things to keep me busy.
When I pulled the rear seat, I noticed a corner of a newspaper page sticking out from under the carpet edge. Once everything was out of the car, I pulled the carpet back and between the backing and the jute were several pieces of newspaper that I carefully pulled out. There is no reason I can think of that these would be there, especially since they were between two things that are generally stuck together pretty well. After digging into a few of the articles that are still partially legible, I determined that this is the Detroit Free Press from February 19 or 20, 1966. My car was assembled in August 1966, and I have no idea where the carpet was manufactured. Of course I haven't found any factory documents, but I may as I dig further into this. I don't know the whole history of this car other than it belonged to Ralph Braun in Council Grove, Kansas for a long time before it came to me. I'm not trying to solve any great mystery here, but it is curious how this paper got under my carpet (which appears to be completely original). I don't want to go down too big of a rabbit hole with this, since most projects on this car end up that way. But I'll keep an eye out for more fun things as I continue the refreshing of this old lady.

These pages you see are all that there is! They seem roughly cut to size, and then they were just lying under the carpet - I taped the pieces back together. The last one with the Friday night TV would have been Feb 18, 1966, one day before the sports stories in the Saturday paper above. And several of those shows I remember quite well.

Best I ever got was the newspapers my grandmother dutifully tied up the rag rugs her sister sent her in the 50s and never, ever used them. I unwrapped them in 2018 and the papers were brittle, but had good ads for 55 Chevies new. Rugs are great, just musty and needed washing.

Still watch Hogan’s Heroes occasionally, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and Wild Wild West too.
This is right in the same category as the attic full of National Geographics. And Life, Time, Newsweek to a lesser degree.
And let’s don’t forget Readers Digest.
