New noise new problem ?

72 Cutlass s
I’m still in restoration mostly cosmetics paint and interior, Hopfully still will be once this problem is diagnosed. Anyway took her out for a Sunday hey look at me ride and gotta a new noise. As soon as it comes out of second reaches speed say 35 40 mpg there is a kinda loud whining like a vacuum whining and seems to be coming from in the steering column. Never heard it before and its consistent once I’m up to about 40mph and stops once I rev down below that. Any ideas ?

Is it road speed related or engine speed related? If you accelerate to the speed where the noise starts then shift into neutral, does the noise continue or not? If you go the same speed but downshift into second to increase engine RPMs does the noise stay the same or change?

I would lean toward engine rpm. I didn’t try either of those things only went out for a mile came back. Now we have a ice and snow storm coming so I snuggled her back in the garage with her flannel PJs hopefully I can try those options by the weekend. Can you tell what I might learn or potential problem might be ? Ty

The only thing even close to the steering column is the speedo cable, but that noise would be road speed related. "Leaning toward" isn't really helpful to diagnose the problem.

Your description sounds like it could be speedometer cable related. In cold weather mine will sure make some noise. I guess it doesn't like the cold any more than I do.

my speedo needle jumps a few mph or slows just a bit at times infrequently (mostly at 60 mph +-) - can I lube it or something (like replace the cable) ?

Of course site won’t let me upload the video. Shows the attachment on the screen doesn’t let me upload. Hit upload and it erases it. Anyway noticed the speedometer spin like a top once the noise started around 50mph. Any idea how to attach a video from my IPhone like to get some opinions on anything they can hear.

Doubtful if we need a video by your description it appears to be typical speedometer failure or near a failure. Try lubing it or just replace it..... Tedd
