Lighter not strong enough?
Lighter not strong enough?
I installed a lighter socket in my car for use in charging my phone. I'm finding that it's 'showing' that it's charging, but the phone power gradually weakens over time. First, I thought it was my charging unit, but I used the socket charger from my truck which I know is great, and the issue continues. Wondering if anyone has had similar experience.
I may not be using the right terminology but, could it be that the wiring for the lighter isn't sufficient for today's phones? If this is the case, can anyone recommend a solution?
Thanks!
Ken

Where did you install it? The GM fusebox for your car should have a 20 amp circuit powering most everything in the dash. Should say something like CLK LTR CTSY for clock, lighter, and courtesy.
A 20 amp circuit will definitely give The Juice to a charger, which would only max pull 2 amps. Now, that's factory wiring, and it was designed to take most of that 20 amps (which is like a hairdryer going ***** out) and feed it to the lighter, which was basically a giant resistor that heated up. The lighter probably pulled at least 5x whatever you phone could ever do.
The problem is, where did you wire yours, and what sort of wiring did you use? What sort of socket? Does it have its own resistor in it to pull the amps down?

I just got one on amazon like that for 15 bucks that has a volt gauge between the sockets. you can read it with the lid on to. If you have an Iphone or a samsung some of those suckers can draw up to 5 amps charging. as for why it's draining your phone instead of charging I'd just run dedicated wires from the fuse panes to the plug and leave the original wires be. This is one of those you may create more problems before you fix the original one.
