Tranny strong enough?
Tranny strong enough?
Im going to replace my 307 in my 85 cutlass with a 403, it has a 4 speed auto trans that came out of a gbody, i think its th2004r? Just wondering if its gonna hold up to the 403 or if i should start saving my money

The tranny will work, but ONLY after it is rebuilt to be able to handle all that extra torque. It can be done, but will prolly cost 500-700.
The nice thing is that you will have a nice OD gear and the engine and tranny should be a direct bolt in (if I am remembering right...)
I would go this route if I were you - a nice combo of HP, torque, and mpg...

If you have a limited budget as long as you keep a light foot on the gas pedal the 2004r should live behind a 403 in stock form until you have the funds to get it rebuilt by a good transmission shop.
Remember upgrading a transmission properly won't come cheap, making quality parts is never cheap. Check around and find out who will do the job properly for you - if you are quoted a very low price you won't get a good job, be sure whoever does the the job is spending your dollars on using properly upgraded internals.
Roger.

Mine lasted quite awhile with the big trans go shift and a billet servo. The bigger boost valves helped, I think. This was with track abuse and slicks before the converter blew. I toasted it when the shift valve stuck from the bad converter and I got pissed off. My TH350C even had a lot of black stuff after flogging it with the 403. Get the biggest cooler you can get too.
The 700 will fit, but you'll need a plate to adapt the motor to the trans. Plus since the 700 is a few inches longer, you'll need a new driveshaft too.
The 200 will work fine, but yeah, start saving
