Arrow leaky transmission gasket,stripped hole.

When I purchased this vehicle the tranny pan gasket was leaky. After changing the filter and gasket I discovered a stripped hole where one of the bolts go in,Hence the leak I guess.I'm looking for some good advice.I've heard of the lock tight glue that you put onto the bolt, one suggested tap and die, another suggested the thread inserts that go up into the hole.I was hoping I wouldn't have to drop the pan again. Is there a way around that? Thanks.

Get yourself a heli-coil kit http://www.helicoil.in/

You can find them at most good hardware and auto parts stores easy to install

Or you can just tap the hole 1 size larger, and get a new bolt.

I've had good luck with the helicoil kits. I've used them on a number of applications including a stripped out exhaust stud hole in a jeep head. All the rattle and banging 4x4 action didn't shake it loose.

There may be room for a nut on top of the bolt.

MudEye- I had this exact same problem and did the helicoil repair back in December of last year. MDCHANIC, and everyone else, were very helpful in walking me through everything. Here is the link for what I did. Good luck.

A Helicoil or similar thread insert is the right way to fix this, but SOME trans bolt holes are through holes. Depending on which one is stripped, you MIGHT be able to use a much longer bolt and get a nut on the top side. You might have to file one side of the nut to fit against the trans case.

I went to Lowes and bought a longer bolt.It worked! And your advice on putting a nut on top will work. There is plenty of clearance to place a nut on top if needed.I don't know why it tightened with the longer bolt but it did.I didn't need the nut on top(even though there is plenty of room.No leaks for 2 months counting.Buy the bolt one measure higher than what you have.It Works!

So for anyone else... Don't helicore until you try this! .56 cents!

Thanks Man!
