The current price is still very good. I have seen them offered for up to $3500. As for old-time stories, when I was a poor grad student in the mid 1970s, my friend at the local dealership brought one in from GMPD. List was $131 then, but I decided I couldn't afford it. I also looked at but had to pass on the $80 list each 66 OAI baffles (sides of the radiator core support). I bought whatever I could, including 66 ducts and bezels, even a pair of heat riser block off plates for the Tri Carbs.
I know the seller personally and have always found him to be honest and up-front about the stuff he has.

I bought my '69 W31 in '96, and within a week or so I went to a Super C**y show, where, at the swapmeet, was a dual snorkel air cleaner for the W30/31/32 for sixty bucks. I thought, I don't need it, mines ok, of course I had not really gotten into the car yet, and quickly regetted not buying it.

Same story here. Bought a few parts from the dealer back in the late '70 and 80's--of course, anything super rare (now) was too much money back then. I remember pricing an OAI hood in 1977 or so...$453! Of course I didn't buy one....or two or three!.
When I bought my first '70 442 the seller also had a '70 W30. He said he had a few parts from it over at the used parts shelf at a local speed shop. Went over and looked after I bought the 442---'70 W-30 alum intake at the too-steep-for-high-schoolers price of $50. Left it thinking maybe I would buy it some other time. Eventually, someone must have bought it as it wasn't there a couple months later.
Where's that crystal ball when you need it?!!

Please don't get me started on low prices.
I grew up in the 60's, and everything you see today that is rare and expensive was abundant and cheap (comparitively speaking).
I could have bought an all original '66 442 with a 400, tri power and 4 speed for $1200 in 1972, when I worked at GM.
Or a one owner 1968 Shelby GT500 (all black) with 40,000 miles for $4800 in 1977.
Or a 1970 red Hemi Cuda for $4500 in 1978.
I could list them all day long, but I won't......

A bit off-topic....but...
When I was ~ 15y/o...in the late 70's we were on a family vacation. Somewhere in rural Tennessee we stopped at a dilapidated gas station in the middle of nowhere. While my mom gassed the car, I wandered around I found out back a 1970 Superbird. Faded pale yellow w/ black vinyl top & graphics. It had a flat tire & was dusty, but was all there & the interior looked good. The gas station guy came over and told me that it ran fine, but needed a clutch & maybe tranny. He said he'd let it go for $1500...maybe less if I had cash. Of course, there was no way I could have paid for it....let alone convince my mom to let me....but that car still ranks as my #3 "that got away".....

Everyone gets all riled up today about these cars, but back in the 60's and 70's, they were DAILY DRIVERS. Go to any parking lot, and you would see 442s with snow tires on the back, or Corvettes that folks used in the winter.
When the oil embargo hit in 1974, the muscle cars were almost worthless. You could buy decent musclecars for 800-1200 all day long.
Buy 'em, beat 'em, and junk 'em.....then start over.....
