'55 Oldsmobile with AC in North Louisiana

Sorry, I don't have a photo, but as of this morning 2/4/2016 there is a '55 with factory air conditioning in the U-Pull-It yard in Monroe, Louisiana. The Rocket V-8 appears complete and the air conditioning equipment and plumbing in the engine compartment is all there; there is literally nothing left aft of the dash from the air conditioning and the body is in terrible condition. I don't recall but was the evaporator equipment in the dash by 1955? There was nothing under the rear shelf.
I post this only so it will help someone looking for parts.

Not sure what they were asking but I would not have let that one get away.

I saw these in a yard around thanksgiving & pulled what I could at the time. I went back yesterday (2-13-16) & had another small window of time & grabbed a few more things.

i think they wanted 3500$ canadian, about 2900? USD?
i didn't think it would get crushed, i mean, you could make 2500$ on a sale or ... 150$? as scrap metal? whats the logic in that?

It makes a wierd kind of logic in that if they discounted all their prices to scrap value they wouldn't be able to charge what they do for anything...and would wind up losing money.

I remember going through a wrecking yard about 20 years ago as they were going out of business. Everything that wasn't bought was getting crushed. I made a lowball offer on a bunch of small parts and they basically told me to take a hike. Unless someone else came along and paid their price, I guess those no longer available and hard to find pieces got flattened.

They're in it for the money, not the sentimental value of saving hard to find parts.

928 Porsche

Could be saved. It lives about 200 yards from my house under that tree. A few small dents and very little rust. Has a transmission problem and probably more, has sat there for about 6 or 7 years and will be there probably for another 5 or 6 before it falls apart and is hauled off to the wrecking yard or a pick- pull. I could probably get it cheap but don't have the desires or funds for this kind of car.... Tedd

The 928 is worth scrap....that's it...there is no demand for parts or the entire car.

Yep...complete/solid running ones go for a couple thousand. If it's an S model in excellent condition you might get north of ten for it from what I've seen.

I played hooky from work today to search for the hardware to trim out my wagon. Sunset TX. It was overcast and very pleasant aside from the allergens!

A friend of mine has been "collecting" wrecks on his property since the mid '80s, here are a couple of them. I need to sort through all the photos and I'll add more later. Nothing special, mostly just '70s vintage full size Olds and one late 70's/early 80's Cutlass (not pictured).

There are tons of other unusual cars there too...Gremlin, couple Pacers, Datsun 1200 (my first car).

Sounds like the property will be getting cleaned up by a metal recycler in the spring, I'm hoping to get in there to try and salvage some good parts like grills, lights, etc.

I see lots of good parts there!! He won't disclose the location though. I think he said he pulled several consoles out & keeps going back for lots more stuff. Hard to believe there are still yards like this out there.

This doesn't follow the topic directly, but more of a junkyard parts from newer cars that can be used in these older cars. I omitted the very well known like the JGC steering box. Do you have any DIYs like this?

the 98-02 ls1 f-body rear disc backing plates bolt up to many Olds. Don't throw away front drum brake hubs, we use them for disk brake upgrades.

Homelink visor, you could somehow mount it in your visor or in a more discreet location. Cut one out of virtually any visor in the junkyard.

Keyless entry/trunk release, an easy mod, if you have power locks. The easiest is to use 95-01 GM Keyless entry modules. These are not integrated into the electronics like new cars and can be programmed by grounding a wire. Here is one how to link. The modules are usually under the rear shelf and can be a pain to get out. There are a ton of cars that use these, if you want more info on the models and locations of the modules PM me.

If you want more features you can use 98-02 f-body modules. These give you the dome light fading off, parking lights blinking, etc. These modules are down in the passenger kick panel. Learn how here.

One touch windows. Get a module from the driver door in a 92-95 Taurus and other Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. One for each window. Find out how easy it is here.

Rear view mirror. If you want a really nice windshield mounted rear view mirror look at the 2005 and up Toyota Matrix. Some of them have temperature, compass, auto dimming and map lights.

You probably won't need this for your Olds but, a lot of 90s gm cars had weatherproof relays with mounting brackets. Look on the firewall.

Miata uses time delay defrost relay under dash by steering wheel. Jeep wrangler relay for the rear defroster circuit is in the tub harness next to your left knee. The XJ has theirs in the PDC center under the hood These might be useful for someones project.

Need a cheap coolant temp sensor, get one from a 90s Civic, back left side of motor. Take a crescent wrench.

High power relays for your electric fan setup, Volvo under the top edge of the radiator to cover. 94-97 850s and I think others, part # 1398845.

Need a good two speed temperature for those Windstar fans? Get a sensor from a BMW (180/195*F Part # 61311378073), I believe 91-99 and it's located on the passenger side of the radiator.

Need a way to mount a sensor in your radiator hose? Some SAABs have a metal tube with a sensor in it in the upper radiator hose. This must be popular as I've yet to find one.

That's all I can think of now. I'm still looking for something I can use for a trunk release. Also looking for what vehicles have a posi and 373s that I can find in a junkyard for my 71.

Here are some cars I know about. The yard has cars for sale and cars for parts. Great yard I have been there many times for Olds parts.

New Mexico junkyard tour .

I flew out to the OCA nats a couple of days early to search for parts for my '63 Dynamic 88 hardtop.
I flew into Albuquerque and got a Dodge mini-van . I went south on I-25 to Socorro , where I saw this old Barracuda . I asked the guy if there were any junkyards around there . He told me about some old cars a few blocks away.
I asked the guy at the body shop across the street if he knew anything about the place , He told me that he really didn't , except the guy was there infrequently . He told me that , " If you see a white bronco , then the guy's there ."
Everybody was so nice in New Mexico .

NM junkyard tour part 2

I went south from Socorro on I-25 to NM route 380 . I drove through a desert land of sagebrush for 70 miles with scarcely a ranch house every 15 or 20 miles .
On the outskirts of the small town of Corrizozo I saw 380 Auto Wrecking . The guy had modern cars in the yard , but he had some complete project cars for sale out front .

NM junkyard tour part 4

I drove south from Corrizozo on US 54 to Alomogordo . I spent the night there at Super 8 .
Next morning I checked out an auto body shop on US 54 and saw an ElCamino project and a nice Monte Carlo .
Just down the road , there was what used to be "Wild Bill's Auto Wrecking " . It had several acres of pre 1980 cars . "Wild Bill" has evidently passed on and the whole yard and it's contents are for sale . I called the number on the fence , and the executor of the estate told me that it could be mine for $400,000 !

NM junkyard tour part 5

I left Alomogordo on US 70 and drove past Holloman Air Force Base and the White Sands Missle range , toward Las Cruces .
Just on the outskirts of Las Cruces I saw a shop where the guy was doing rat-rods and customs . I asked him if there was any wrecking yards with old cars and he told me about this place in Dona Ana just off exit 9 on I-25. This place was called Black's Auto Wrecking and he had two rows of pre-1970 cars he called "memory lane " .
That's where I hit the jackpot ! There was a 1963 Olds Dynamic that I garnered several parts from .
I returned to Alburquerque up I-25 that evening to the OCA nats.

Charlie Jones,

Man did your pics and descriptions bring back some memories! Before I moved to NM and bought the yard in Albuquerque, I used to drive out there, at least once a year, from Wisconsin and tour the same places you did. I'm 99% certain that the place you went to in Dona Ana was where i "rescued" the 70 Judge. Thanks for sharing your trip.

Sad ending to an otherwise good story !

I went to my landlord's shop to pick up the parts I had sent home when I was in New Mexico .
One of the boxes looked like this ;

And this ;

And this ;

Well , I opened the box , and found this ;

And this ;

And this ;

Needless to say , these two items are now junk , thanks to poor packaging and the box getting jammed in the automatic sorting equipment .

BTW I took this stuff to a UPS store in Albuquerque , because I was staying in a hotel and had no way to pack it myself .

It was nothing as vintage as the stuff in the posts above, but I went over to Pull-A-Part in Winston-Salem this afternoon because I saw on their Web site they had a '95 Cutlass Supreme coupe on the yard and I figured it would be a good opportunity to see what it might have that I could use on my '95 Cutlass Supreme convertible. There are always plenty of Luminas and Gran Prixs on those yards but Cutlasses are getting fewer and farther between, especially the two-door ones, so I decided it would be worth the trip over there. I ended up spending an hour and a half going over it like a piranha, pulling off several things that I needed like the backup light assembly and a pair of correct sun visors in surprisingly good shape, as well as a bunch of other stuff that I just might need someday like a power antenna. I don't think I have ever pulled so many parts from just one car on a single visit--or run up such a bill--but it was fun and it was one of those bird-in-the-hand sort of scenarios. The only real disappointment was that both the exterior door handles were broken. Mine on the convertible are fine but it's something does break on those cars and would be good to have in reserve.

I live in Asheville NC and am wondering what the name of the Junkyard is? I would enjoy a walk through.
