It's time...Pre-approved eBay vehicle auction

I was wondering, can you do an eBay vehicle listing with pre-approved bidders only? This would be for ClassicOldsmobile members only. I know you can do this on other listings but wasn't sure on vehicles.

I've been thinking seriously about this for a while now and thought it would be a great way to show appreciation to the members here for their input, efforts, and feedback made to get this car on the road again. Plus, it would assure that this car is going to someone who loves Oldsmobiles, not just someone who stumbles across the listing and wants a fast car to add to their collection of non-Olds.

After talking to a few long time CO members in TN, the conclusion has been that I'm at the perfect stopping point for the car to get my mother in law some additional money. It still needs the 4 speed components and related exhaust components, some small rust repair (both front fender bottoms and a slight bit on the door) and paint. All of those things can be done quickly and can have the car looking absolutely amazing in almost no time. Good news is you would have a running Hurst trans and shifter that could easily converted into cash. Wheels/tires too. Anyway, all I know about the car could be detailed in the listing.

I'd love to keep the car forever, but my wife really isn't into it as much as you would think and she is ready for this too. I feel the right thing to do is get my mother in law some additional funds. So here we go...

Please don't anyone PM me asking to buy it outright. I'd like to go the eBay route to CO members-only (if this is possible.) If it doesn't meet reserve, then maybe I'll sell direct after that. I do realize this is limiting my audience some, but this is my way of showing appreciation for all ClassicOldsmobile.com is.

Thoughts/concerns?

edit: Here is what I came up with:

An eBay auction, starting 9/11 in the evening and open to all to bid. However, an interesting twist will be that I'm offering multiple incentives for a CO member to bid and own the car.

1.) You must be a registered ClassicOldsmobile.com member as least one post as of tomorrow, July 31st 2016

2.) If you win the eBay auction on the 1970 442 W-30 I will have for sale, upon full payment and pickup/delivery I will give you $442.30. You can use this to your advantage when placing that final bid.

3.) I've suspended the sale of the 1963 F-85 Deluxe and I'm giving the new owner of the W-30 auction referenced above the ability to purchase that car also for $442.30 under what I had it last listed for here in the for sale section. That price was $4500. So just a shade over $4k. If they decline the discounted sale, I will just relist that car here and elsewhere at a non-discounted price.

Please spread the word, especially if you know of someone here that has interest and hasn't posted or visited in a long while. My photo gallery is in my signature below and show the car at multiple stages throughout the journey. Thank you!!!

I would think an open auction would be best, if a CO member gets it then so be it. Let capitalism run its course. Your alternative is to run it here first with a price that the voices in your head dictate that you can live with. If it does not move in a period of time, then move on to an alternate venue.

I agree with Eric 100%. Your participation on this forum is appreciation enough. If the end goal is to get your mother in law some extra money, why leave any on the table. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't understand your logic on this... if you want to sell the car for your mother in law why not post it for sale here with your asking price and you will be offering it to CO members...

IF it fails to sell here put it on ebay

Thanks Tim. Wish I could have met you in TN. I walked by your car numerous times but didn't know you were there. You've always been good for giving some advice/interest in my posts.

Part of my struggle was I wanted to find it a good Oldsmobile home, not just a "I have a yacht and 10 vacation homes and need to find another sports car a home." It really is a little more than about the money.

The suggestion to just list for a fixed price here would undoubtedly allow a "whoever sees it first" opportunity. Bidding would allow adequate exposure and time for a buyer to participate if they wanted.

To tell you the truth it souNds like someone I know that sold a 67 plymouth and he follows the new owner around to some car shows around here and lets people know that it used to be his car, maybe you will have sellers remorse? If you sell it that will be it, it can't matter what the buyer wants it for because he may decide to sell it for whatever reason a year after you sell it to him...then what?

That's fine. I just want the car to go to someone who loves Oldsmobiles. Of course that's the audience here at this website.

Here is a suggestion that may work for you.

Do a silent auction. You can pm the members you would like to give first opportunity too for their e-mail if you do not have it already. Set up a group e-mail with a start date, and end date. Set a reserve in your head, and keep the bidders informed when the reserve is met. Then if the reserve is met sell it to the highest bidder at the end of the sale.

That being said, I agree with the others. You have a commodity that will generate interest with the condition, documentation, and original engine. The best place to maximize value for both you and your mother in law is an broader audience.

I really think it depends on what you have and what condition it is in. Obviously I'm having problems selling the F-85 Deluxe sedan, but this road running, broadcast card W-30 with original engine, well I don't see a problem there. If I were going to ask $75k like that guy in the parking lot in TN...yes, I'd think it would be a problem. But I'm realistic in my expectations.

For Sale with price.

Pick a price that makes you comfortable & list it For Sale.

End of problem.

Your opinion has been noted. Just interested in knowing why you feel it would work out better that way vs an auction.

I can understand the importance of selling it to the 'right' care taker / custodian as well as offering it to the C/O community.

Apparently, I am not quiet in line with the others here, I do understand what you are trying to do. I am just not sure the best approach you should take. I believe you do understand that once the car is sold it is no longer in your control.
I have in the past and probably will again in the future sell an item to someone for less than what I could have gotten because I believed that person knew, understood, and respected what he was buying. While, I hope no one would ever take a giant loss just to sell a car to a friend, I would say that most people at some point has sold something to a friend for less than they could have gotten if they had just thrown it out there, so any Joe could get there hands on it.

I am not as attached to things in that way. I don't like people telling me what to do with my cars, therefore I limit my opinions to when I'm asked. Once the car is sold then its the responsibility of the next owner to decide on the direction they want to take it.

If getting your MIL additional funds is the primary goal then you need to use the best venue for that. Who buys it is irrelevant.

Thanks Stefano. I know you are one of the retail experts on these cars and I just wanted to disclose to everyone that you have never reached out to me once with an offer to buy because you knew where this car came from and how that would be the wrong thing to do at the time. I came here (around a year ago) like sharkbait and you didn't strike at all. That I respect and I just want to let others know this publicly.

I would like to state that this car wasn't my dream, it was my father in law's. So, you are right, although I love the car and have tried to learn all I could about it, once it is sold it is sold. I may never see it again. It was a journey that I loved, documented, and learned from. Made a great roadtrip to meet Eric and have the car serviced in the proper way. Met some other great people here both online and in person. It was an experience I'd do all over again. But once gone, what happens with it is out of my control. I do get it.

If I was retirement age, I'd keep the car...but I still have young kids and it just doesn't fit as well into the gameplan at this point. Better in another Olds lovers hands because that's what my father in law was. I mean who else owned so many of these cars back in the day? Not many.

When a car becomes about money only , it is no longer a hobby but a business , I applaud what you are trying to do . Your father in law would be happy . Stick to your gut feeling and do what makes all involved happy . need more people like you in this hobby . We all have dealt with people we would not sell a car to for any amount of money , but would basically give the same car to someone you felt would appreciate the car and preserve its story.

Thanks for the thoughts. I love to drive it on the back roads here and enjoy telling its story. However, this isn't about me, so I must back out of it and do the right thing. I have the memories of it now and those will never be sold.

I think I've come up with a nice solution to get visibility and also give back a bit to someone here if they are the winning bid. Details to follow soon. Sale in early September.

70 post stipulations removed. Anyone who is a ClassicOldsmobile.com member with at least one post as of tomorrow, July 31st 2016 is eligible for the CO discount discussed above.

This really simplifies things. Good luck to all who have interest.

Guess I should post the videos in this thread also for those who haven't seen them. If you want to skip to the good stuff, it is around 2:50 and 3:50 into the video. Also please excuse the wind noise. I'll try to get some additional video for the auction of idle and exhaust.

One other thing I would like to add, is that starting August 13th...I will show the car to any interested ClassicOldsmobile.com member. If you are local or planning a trip to CLT and interested, please let me know and if I can make it work I will. Heck, I'll even pick you up from the airport. I can't get any more disclosure than your own eyes on the car and broadcast card. PM me if interested.
