INFO PLEASE!! dupont matador red color code PICS NOW
hi im looking 4 the correct 70 olds dupont color code for matador red, olds uses code 75 but dupont uses 6-9 numbers 4 the correct mixture, the only way 2 find it is on a original 70 OLDS build sheet, if any1 has a 70 olds with build sheet that came matador red WILL YOU PLEASE POST THE DUPONT CODE it like 6-9 numbers
im in the process of selling my sx455 and the buyer had it appraised 2day, the appraiser said my matador red had a orangish color 2 it so he says its not matador red, i painted it myself i bought the paint myself but used ppg paint, i dont see the orange but the appraisers word is what counts!! he knocked 4500 off the appraisal because of the paint color not being correct, the buyer is gettn a loan for more than im asking so he needs the extra 4500, i paint 4 a living so were going 2 strip the chrome and door panels and quickly repaint it with dupont matador red BUT when we went 2 the paint store 2 price the paint they had 5 different dupont mixtures, i need the correct 70 olds dupont code bad!!
the appraiser did know his sh-t!!!!!! he checked frame, tranny, and rear end numbers, and asked if i would remove my alterator/brackets so he could check the engine number, i said no i wouldnt and he ended saying it must be correct because my motor and rear end have the exact same date code, he knew his sh-t but i sure didnt like him taking my seats out and nit pickn at my car

i know im a little color blind more when it comes 2 reds and oranges!! the buyer said there was a hint of orangish/red but not as orange as the appraiser said it was, it looks all red 2 me, i used ppg paint color code 75, it could of been mixxed just a little off and changed the color

2189 is the paint code for Ditzler/PPG, your paint store should be able to match it, or go to www.Autocolorlibrary.com and enter it there, it will give you the paints that you need.

the appraiser said over and over that it looked like orangish rally red instead of darker matador red, it dosnt look orange at all 2 me it looks like red, LOL!! the problem with color code 75 is theres 4-5 different formulas 2 make it, the only way 2 make sure its 100% correct is 2 use the exact 1970 dupont color code and 2 seal/primer it almost the same color the factory did!! ive been think about it if i shoot on top the red paint its going 2 come out darker red than matador red, im going 2 have 2 wet on wet seal it grey and than shoot the dupont matodor red on grey 2 get the same factory matador red,
is there a web site that i can look up the dupont codes used on oldsmobiles in 1970??

It doesn't have to be DuPont to be right, cross reference between paint mfg. is fine. By the way do you plan on repainting your car because of what the appraiser said? I don't think that would be wise. There are many people out there who are in "the business" who don't know diddly squat. Have your paint annalized by a paint shop, and see what it matches up to. Post pics of your car, and we will tell you how it looks.

you could punch that paint code into duponts computer and it could spit out 5-6 different alternates/shades of that color. so which one is right? and because of that, how can that guy say that the color on your car is wrong?

Still, if it's orange at all, it's not 1970 Matador Red. At least to my eyes, Matador Red is more of a fire engine red. Rallye Red has a definite orange tint.
The paint codes are in your assembly manual.

ok i thought about it but just didnt remember till now. i work in a dupont body shop and was askin our paint sales man about color chips awhile back for my friends 42 hudson he said dupont has classic car chips on line. thought of that after work today and this is what i found for you. you can go to dupont website and look through the old chip books lots of info there paint codes for cars and interior stuff like that. but it says for mfr paint code 75 O for olds is called Matador Red it gives 2 dupont numbers one is for lucite 5118LH and the other is for dulux 5118DM i would think the numbers cross to the newer paint lines. but the same chip also said for chevy it was called cranberry red for buick it was called fire red and for pontiac it was called cardinal red. this should be the anwer to your prob. these are the chip book paint codes if there is a variant it wont pop up like using the mfr code odds are the variant isnt going to be that far off but the chip it shows doesnt look like it has orange in it.
this is the link to the chip book page
http://pc.dupont.com/hcl/search/imag.../Data/Domestic Cars/GM/Gm 1968-1971/CHE 1970/003988.jpg&mode=fullscrn

the appraiser was hired by the credit union 2 put a value on my car, the buyer is tring 2 get a loan for almost 8k more than im asking 2 put some extra money in his pocket thats cool with me cuz he has 2 pay it back not me! i paint so i can have it stripped, painted, wet sanded/bufffed in a week but i dont want 2 unless i know its correct!! ive had a few friends look at it in the light and they all say it looks orangish red, i paint all my cars on top of white so the paint is brighter i think the white brought out the orange
i checked out the paint chips and its the same code 75 that the paint store uses, im going 2 go check 2 see if the different formulas are for olds, chev, pontiac and if so ill go with olds dupont

were did that guy look inside or outside at it i noticed the side pic looks right is it cause of the flourecent light changing the color. i have a hard time seeing them mix the paint wrong cause you prob bought a gallon of paint and it is gonna take a pretty big oops to make it organge. since you bought the ppg code 75 paint it should cross really close to dupont. since you painted over white sealer you could have needed another coat to get proper hiding the factory prod went over grey. it must be a nice car if the guy still wants it

had some time so i checked it out on the mixing computer at work looked up gm code 75 for a 1970 brought up only one option code 5118 they called it cranberry year range was 70 - 70 used on chevy pontiac buick oldsmobile

the guy looked at it out side, i washed it and gave it a quick buff, it dosnt look like dc2x4drvr's rally red at all!!!! i can really see the orange in his and im kinda red/orange color blind!!!
im sure its the white base!!! if you use 2 different color primers on 1 car 1light primer 1darker you cant see the difference untill the sun is on it the light1 will be bright the dark1 will be darker, it has 2 be the white base is making it a lighter red/orangish when its in the sun, if i reshoot im going 2 wet on wet it grey and than use dupont 75 even tho i dont like it

Something to keep in mind is that the pigments used in today's paint are almost certainly not the same pigments used in 1970 paint. Sure, the paint companies develop their formula to look the same -- but they can't cover all types of light. Different pigments behave differently in different light. You might have an original-paint car and new-paint car which look identical under sunlight, but different once the parking lot lights turn on.

It don't get much more orange than this
This is Sherwin Williams 73,74,75 Buick Apple Red, same as Olds Omega Red, Pontiac Buccaneer Red and Chevy Medium Red looks orange to me Code 75 PPG # 2546

what year of ppg code 75 did you use i did some checking at work i found out this
paint code 75 typed in on our mixing computer with different years will get different results
code 75 1969 = dupont # 5018 embassy gold
code 75 1970 = dupont # 5118 cranberry used on buick chevy olds pont
code 75 1971-75 = dupont # 5339 cranberry red used on buick chevy olds pont
code 75 1973-77 = dupont # 5485 medium red used on buick chevy olds pont
from my research if you had the wrong year you would have the wrong color
crossed the ppg #2546 and it crossed to dupont #5485 which as you see above not the right color

Not sure this will help paint code wise, but qualitatively those both seem a bit orange-ey to my eyes. This is what I think of as matador red:
That is another members car, but I believe he said it was original matador red paint when he first posted them. (His original post now has deadlinks, but I swiped copies since it was SO PRETTY!)
