I met a former owner of my Cutlass convertible today...from the 1970s!!!
I bought a 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible in 2012 from the parents of a man who had purchased the car when he was 16 years old and died in the mid-40s of cancer (rest in peace, Dwight McKarns). I knew Dwight bought the car in 1986, which is when I first saw it in our small town. I only saw it a few times in the late 80s, then it disappeared for about 20 years. Anyway, I was told by Dwight's parents that an airline pilot once owned the car. I found a receipt in the car with the name "David Clementson". Thanks to the internet, I found David's current address, but he was never home when I stopped by.
Well, I knew the car was likely being sold today and was leaving the state forever, so yesterday, I tried one more time to get ahold of Mr. Clementson. I left my business card with his neighbor and he returned my call last night. Mr. Clementson, a retired airline pilot for U.S. Air out of Pittsburgh, first saw the car at Carlisle in 1978. When it didn't sell that weekend at the swap meet, he contacted the owner in York, PA and purchased the car. In 1980, he moved to Salem, OH. In 1984, he sold the car to another U.S. Air pilot, Bill Sanders, who was living in Salem. By 1986, the second pilot had sold the car to Dwight McKarns.
Today, just a couple of hours before the car sold and left for Illinois, David Clementson was reunited with the car he hadn't seen since 1984. I'm so glad to get to meet him and have most of the car's history explained. Here's a picture of David with the car today before it sold.
