In times like this, having an electric powered vehicle would be nice. Spending $100's on fuel per month is not fun. Don't get me wrong, I like old school ICE but I see the writing on the wall and don't kid myself that ICE will eventually go away.
30mpg ICE @ $4.75 per gallon for fuel - 1,000 miles driven = $158 in fuel costs
EV @ 12 cents per kWh (avg) - 1,000 miles driven = $42 in electricity costs
Olds 455 big block muscle car getting 8mpg @ 5.00 per gallon for fuel (premium) - 1,000 miles driven = $625 in fuel costs but it is SMILES PER GALLON so well worth the price
Dodge announced that in 2 years, they will release an all electric powered "muscle car" that will rival the Dodge Demon and it will make in excess of 1,000HP + and run 9's in the 1/4 mile. Impressive!
In less that 8 years from now, more than 40% of North American sales will be battery electric powered passenger vehicles. GM will only sell all electric vehicles and completely phase out ICE in 12 years from now. So the writing is on the wall. Love or hate it, ICE will go away in the next decade or so. The remaining ICE that are on the road will stick around for a while until maintenance and parts cost will phase them out and they will go away forever.
So enjoy them while we still got them! Say NO to the garage and trailer queen!
I can see driving an old gas guzzling 60's and 70's muscle car as being regulated and made "illegal" to drive except on certain events or shows a few times per year.
I don't see ICE vehicles being made illegal (here in Amish country the horse and buggy is still a form of transportation seen many times daily), more likely the sale of gasoline will be illegal, or only legal for sale for "off road" use. While electric may be cheaper during these transition years, you can bet that road taxes will dramatically increase on the cost of a recharge once electric has more market share. This is almost certainly going to happen for roadside recharging stations and will probably happen for home recharge stations as well where the charge unit may have a separate meter to keep track of how much energy you are pulling off the grid to drive your car and tax you accordingly. That, or electricity rates as a whole will just increase. I could see owning an electric as a daily driver once prices come down, even adding an EV conversion on a classic for a daily driver (again costs would need to come way down). Disclaimer: This post was not made to get political or go down the political road, so everyone else please don't get carried away.

Good point, like today in some states, certain aftermarket parts are for "off road use only" and one can be ticketed/fined for installing them on a highway driven vehicle.
There is already a company that takes old classic cars and pulls the entire drivetrain out and install a modern electric motor drivetrain with battery cells.
Seeing an old muscle car get ripped at a traffic light by an EV is embarrassing but very probable. Unless it is modified and not stock, the 60's and early 70's muscle car will get destroyed by most EV's, especially the newer ones. If it is a modified muscle car and can run low 12.00s or better, then it can put up a challenge to an EV but will still lose to a Tesla S Plaid which makes 1,020 HP and runs 9.20s in the 1/4 mile

Yeah, I have seen those companies and others like them, but the price range is way beyond me. Of course, I am not in the market for an $80K plus new pickup truck either so I am not their target audience. I was thinking more along the lines of buying a used Tesla or other Hi-Po EV when prices drop (price of replacement batteries would also need to come way down, as the original batteries will likely be at the end of their life span by then). On a related note (fuel efficient classics)my brother is currently building a late 60's Austin American (think 5/4 scale mini cooper) on a newer Fiat Abarth.
Austin American example about 5/4 the size of an original mini cooper:
Mini Cooper (if you have never seen a real original they are tiny):
Fiat Abarth example (the turbo is about the size of my fist):
My brother's current project: (turbo charged 5 speed and incredibly light should make for a fun driving combination)
Apparently we've learned nothing by having a fuel supplied by other countries. Why would you want to buy a product that the replacement power source can only be supplied by a foreign country? The other issue is technology, it changes and becomes obsolete faster than a toddlers diaper with no support or spare parts.
I did not say I "want" anything listed above relating to the development of EV's to happen. I also do not "want" gas to get to $6.00/ gal here on the east coast which it might this summer, I was talking about what I think WILL happen eventually. And when it does, I would not be opposed to having an EV driver and even less opposed to an EV with a classic shell. As to not turn the thread political I will leave it at that.
I use one credit card for all gas purchases. The statement came today and my gas costs have doubled since last month purchasing the SAME amount of fuel- maybe one more 15 gallon fill-up.
Somebody is making a shitload of money off all these market gyrations, including off gas that was bought for half the current price per barrel.
Don't get me wrong, I like capitalism. I don't like pure unadulterated greed.
"god money, let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised..."
The historic 57 Chevy Project X has been converted to electric. That is an absolute shame.
Now that I agree with. Although I still think the best iteration of that car was the way it appeared in HOLLYWOOD KNIGHTS. I can still picture the scene where the owner is telling his buddies he will be heading over to Vietnam for some land surveying as he reaches in to play "All the leaves are brown" on the radio one of his freainds had just installed.

Absolutely. One of the best car movies ever period. How fine was Michelle Pfeiffer in that movie. I swear Like that movie just as much or even more than American Graffiti.
I don't know, I think "Christine" would be up among my top car movie choices along with the two you listed. Face it, how nice would it be to own a car that literally restores itself (hopefully without the downside of beeing pure evil). Decisions... Decisions...
I so agree with you. Christine is absolutely one of best car movies ever. I always felt the soul in cars. Christine so had it. My oldest Daughter's middle name is Christine. My sister also.
Hollywood Knights hit a note with me. I was the last of seven. My Grandpa on my Mom's side cruised. I was the youngest. I got to sit in front on the fold down armrest. 54 Crown Imperial by the way. Crown Imperial. Power everything and an early Hemi. Genetics. My oldest brother's would cruise South Broadway. Then Englewood closed the streets. It moved to West Colfax. Epic Epic nights out there. Then poof... Hollywood Knights hit home for me because the cruising scene got smashed down during my years

The logistics and cost of buying, charging, and using an EV, and availability of raw materials for batteries and wiring, electric grid limitations, etc., not to mention the lack of repeat purchase demand to support 40% of all new EV's in 8 years is highly unlikely to come to fruition, but I definitely agree with enjoying your 8 to 12 mpg BBO now while you can still afford to. I've put 10k miles on mine in a year and don't expect to be able to afford to drive it in 10 years.
I know this thread is tiptoeing around the edges of being political, which is against the forum rules. We can vent about the prices but we need to not comment about why we think its happening or the thread will be closed. I do lots of venting over on facebook or with my friends through emails discussing political issues of the day. But not here on Classicoldsmobile.
It's like playing ping-pong. I paid $5.09/gal for HWY diesel last week & I paid $4.99/gal for the same HWY diesel this week (Eastern Shore North Carolina).
Tonight along the border NC side is $3.99. Still $4.29 on VA side last night. Grand Marquis had half a tank and at $3.99 still took $49 to fill it up.
Guess I'll try to fill the 08 F150 tomorrow. It too has about half a tank but it's a 27 gal tank. I've learned to not let that one get much under 1/2 tank!😬

That is what I like to hear!! I dropped Facebook because all the politics was getting CRAZY on that site.
the cost of higher fuel prices is not only felt at the pump. It drives up prices on everything. As we have moved further away from producing goods close to the location of final purchase, this indirect cost of higher fuel cost has a greater effect today than before.
I just paid $3.94 per gallon myself. No one likes paying more for fuel. However, if there is a sunny-side- up point of view to today’s higher fuel prices, it should be laid out for all to see.

maybe less wasteful use of resources. Living within our bioregions-more local less global (wishful thinking).
Fuel has finally settled back to a sense of normality here in south oz, $4.33USD/gal today from $6.21USD/gal two weeks ago.
I expect it to go lower in the coming weeks as we get closer to a Federal election in May. The encumbered political party will play their pre election, 'Look at us we care about the cost of living', card.
I'm just waiting to see which gas station will be the first to start accepting bitcoin as payment because that way people can combat the massive swings in price these oil companies are imposing.
This has just begun here in south oz.
'On The Run' gas stations, a BP franchise has announced it will start accepting crypto currency as payment for fuel.

In order to appreciate where you are today relative to past pricing for gasoline, inflation must be factored into the equation. Take a look. We are better off today than we were in many past years:
When prices for gasoline collapsed during the 2020–2021 pandemic many drillers and refiners idled equipment and crews. A coalition of those companies led by the CEO of Devon Energy changed their operations strategy to keep from overproducing petroleum products in the future and thereby support prices. We are seeing the effects of supply and demand in action.

I did hear that Sheets gas stations started to accept it as payment and I figured it would have to hit the mainstream soon enough. This crypto craze is the new "dot com" era IMO.
