How do U Unlock a Theftlock stereo?
I just replaced the theftlock stereo in my 98 regency with another from the boneyard. (cheaper to replace than fix - cd was screwed up). Anyway, the radio went in great, but it is locked. GM says this will happen anytime the battery is disconnected. Never happened like that on my old stereo, so I think they're slinging some horse hockey.
1. How do you get the unlock program and code WITHOUT going through GM? I called them and asked them but they insist they need my car for the whole day because it takes about 2 hours. Excuse me, I'm so allergic to crap from them lately. I know that you press some buttons on the radio to get the codes and then have to dial 1 800 537 5140 and give them a code to identify whether it's chebby, olds, buick etc. Once they get this 6 digit code they will give you the 4 digit unlock for your stereo. Now I need your help. What buttons do I press and what are the 6 digit codes for Oldsmobile and saturn?
2. While I was out and about I also got my wife a AM/FM stereo CD c/w built in equalizer for her 1996 Saturn. (25 bucks - not bad) Duh,,, same theftlock problem. That's why I need the 6 digit code for Saturn. Thanks guys, I know someone out there has the answer to this issue.

My wife's car had that system and if the power went out you had to have the individual code for that specific radio to activate it. But I think there was another way like you said though.

Try this website. I have not tried it myself to know for sure that it works.

If it does not work and you get the codes off the radio like the post says, I may can help you tomorrow.

Wow! I have never heard of that before. Seems like something GM would do though. If all else fails you could get a Best Buy CD player and install it yourself. Of course, that would be more expensive than a slavage yard replacement.

The second default is the actual code the radio will have installed from the factory and is the automatic default if the power goes out or something. Anyway I'm not a radio expert so I hope this isn't causing confusion. I'm assuming that this would be the actual code the radio was built with and overrides anything that is programmed in afterwords, if that makes any sense.
Apparently, most people DON'T change their theftlock code, and GM doesn't recommend it either. Guess it's kind of like reprogramming your TV remote, and I hate the idea of doing that cause it never works right afterwards.
I've heard that GM will unlock it for free if they sold you this problem. But, they didn't and I don't want to pay GM. I found a website that sells GM unlock codes guaranteed to work for about 5 bucks. Pretty reasonable. What I think is that they're just passing along information that's out there for free making $5.00 a shot in the process.
There's way too many cars out there with theft deterent for someone not to know how the unlock works. I just don't trust GM Service anymore after the last 2 times I got screwed by them.
