Homemade HEI

Have any of the members here seen a homemade HEI? Seems like a Mopar star and a Ford pickup will work if you mount a GM module to the underside of your distributor and hook up the wire correctly. Anyone seen one of these?

Never heard of it. I can't imagine why anybody would try anything like this when HEI's are so plentiful and cheap.

The module can be mounted anywhere. Such as in front of the radiator to keep it cool. As long as you have a trigger of some sort and wired correctly you can make it work. I thought about converting my old Accel dual point into an HEI at one point because I needed a small cap distributor but as Redoldsman pointed out there are other options nowadays.

The reason being, most of the small cap ones are not as cheap as this conversion and there is, most of the time, a space concern with the big cap on the factory HEI. Some still want the factory look.

How cheap is this conversion? You can get a new pertronix for about 70 bucks and still have a factory look without the Frankenstein module.

some people just like the homemadeness of doing things themselves, just to see if they can do it. then there is the wow factor from someone that sees its home made.

The only Wow factor for me would be in "Wow, why would anyone waste their time making a perfectly good points system more complicated, more expensive, and less reliable?"

Yes

His name obviously is Dave. Joe P. gave me his info about a year ago or less. Hes a very smart, opinionated guy, but he knows his business. I sent him an extra points dist for my 67 442. He converted it to HEI for $204.00. I also sent him a UHV ignition box which i gutted as i didnt have the dist to go with it. Dave put the module in the box instead of under the dist. So it will look like factory UHV ignition but its HEI. I painted my dist cap red and the coil also as thats how the UHV ignition only came. It took him 3 months so if your interested but driving your car now, then get an extra dist and send it to him so you wont be down while waiting. Normally he puts the module under the dist or i guess you can put it anywhere so long as its grounded properly. He will give you specific instructions printed when he returns it to you. You can call him, just dont ask for Dave, LOL hes the only one who answers the phone.
First just google him and read his instructions. I think a fair amount of guys on a similar Buick site used him and love the results. I still havnt put mine to use yet so i cant say Yay or Nay, but it looks great. He can also convert it to MSD IGN.
Hes a great guy to talk to, I called him alot the last month he had it, and he was ok with my calling.
